Selling a car - test drive & other questions

About to advertise car for sale & dreading it , but as not replacing trade in not available.

Not sold or bought like this before so have some questions

It’s insured for only me to drive - is a test drive normal? Will I need to change insurance to cover this?

Payment - what is best way of doing payment- will be £10k ? If bank transfer how is a chargeback avoided? Do I write receipts as proof?

Any other tips for selling?

Have you tried we buy any car?

Holyridonkulus · 17/10/2021 15:39

You will most likely find a franchised or non franchised dealer will buy from you happily

Yes, it’s offer is about £1k less than it’s likely to sell for.

Second hand cars are making great money right now. We got a quote from a local garage and we’re pleased with the price. Obvs you get a bit more private but couldn’t face the hassle of the money etc. Also if it’s a 10k you’ll find there’s more market for it at a dealership where people can get credit, worth an ask

You’d be mad to sell a car to a dealership right now!
chitchatchatter · 18/10/2021 02:51

Why @Hetty0?

Hetty0 · 18/10/2021 10:16

As above, you can get much more for selling privately right now.

It would be good for OP to get answers to her original questions as it’s something I’m looking into too!

Can you say PayPal only? But not the Friends and Family option as I hear that’s not the right way to do things. We sold our old car for £1600 and he paid in cash but I doubt you’ll get £10k in cash 😂

Qwertykeys · 18/10/2021 13:09

Not sure on the payment, but if the buyer has car insurance they might be able to test drive on there insurance if they are covered for " any other vehicles"

Cover for 'any other vehicle ' is usually just 3rd party

I've sold a lot of cars, you should insist that the buyer provides proof of insurance before they test drive it, there are companies which do day insurance. Bank transfer is the way to get paid, it cannot be reversed by the buyer. Don't accept PayPal, if you accept cash then I recommend you insist that they come to the bank and pay it to the cashier in person before filling in any of the paperwork. That way you avoid the risk of counterfeit notes or being robbed by someone that knows you're sitting on 10k. I also recommend you insist on seeing and photographing their driving licence before you allow them to drive it and never allow them to hold the keys when you aren't sat in the car to avoid them just driving off with it.

The majority of buyers are perfectly decent but the above minimises the risk of any issues.

@Hetty0, there are many risks selling privately from the car being stolen from you during the so called test drive to fake notes and reversible payments so if you have no clue what you're doing and/or it's a car worth more than a couple of grand I'd seriously recommend selling to a dealer. Yes you'll get more privately if you sell that way but the risks are greater to

I've worked in this trade over 30 years, most people have no clue and can leave themselves open to risks. I'd rather get a grand less for a car than lose it all
