Best site for electric car leasing?

Hi all,

I'd like to look at leasing a small electric car. Has anyone done this recently, and can recommend the site / provider they used?

I'm also interested in which car you chose. I need something small mainly for town & city driving, am open to recommendations - thank you!

Following because I have been looking for exactly the same.

Let's hope we get lots of advice, TreeLawney!

I leased a zoe from Renault about 5 years ago and have recently bought a second hand Nissan leaf which is 6 years old. So I can't really answer your first question about where to lease from.
But in reality either the leaf or the zoe would fit well for round town driving. The mileage on the newer versions is much better now but mine will do 90 miles on a single charge. It's double that on the new ones I think.
Personally I prefer the zoe, my DH prefers the leaf. They both accelerate like bullets. Both have speed limiter or cruise control functions. They both can be programmed to heat up in the morning at a certain time if they are plugged in over night. The app for the leaf is paid for (I don't have it), not sure about the zoe, it was free back when I had one.

I would suggest go via carwow. You select the type of car and terms of lease and it comes back with options. I got my current car that way (not electric) and it was completely hassle-free.

Joining in here. Except I want a big-but-cheap EV with good range. Looking at the MG5EV but not sure how to go about leasing a car, having not done it before.

Mainly thinking about leasing an EV because of battery decline. But open to thoughts on that.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 17/10/2021 15:24

I don't have an electric car but my brother does.

There's no one good site to lease from really, because the deals and offers change so often. I think he hovered around a few different lease comparison sites and pounced when he saw a good deal.

In terms of cars themselves, if you're looking for small electric I'd look at Renault Zoe, DS 3 Crossback eTense (yes, it really is called that), Peugeot e208 and Vauxhall e-Corsa (which are the same thing really because Peugeot and Vauxhall are both owned by the same company and the cars share a platform and tech). The Honda e is rather lovely but it's expensive and doesn't have the best range. Ditto new Fiat 500.

Thanks all.

I'm finding it very confusing!!!

@Photosymphysis yes that’s exactly why I’m thinking of leasing though it’s not something I’ve ever done before so I feel quite lost with it!

iwishiwasafish · 17/10/2021 17:22

So is it specifically the leasing that is causing the confusion? I have leased 3 cats so far, so happy to answer any questions Smile

iwishiwasafish · 17/10/2021 17:22
  • cars, not cats. I like the idea of leasing a cat though!

Same here. Never done it before. No idea what I'm doing!

I think batteries these days are expected to last about 100,000 miles then it costs about 5000 to replace them.
Some cars lease the batteries eg Renault zoe so you always lease them even if you buy the car second hand so they will replace the batteries when they start to lose charge.
Some cars you buy the batteries outright eg leaf. Then you pay to replace them.
I work on the fact that at current prices it is about 1/4 price of petrol so I put the other 3/4 in an account to save up for new batteries when I need them.

Nice idea, but I'll be using the 3/4 to pay for the lease...

I can 100% recommend Onto - it's a car subscription so you are only ever tied into one month at a time (which you can extend up to a max of three years). We have a brand new ID.3 which is fab. You can swap cars every month if you want too - it's very flexible and everything is included (insurance etc).

That looks great.
Sadly doesn't cover my area at the moment, but I can really see the appeal for shorter term hires.

"Nice idea, but I'll be using the 3/4 to pay for the lease..."

Which is fine, just make sure you have a lease that includes battery rental as they then replace the batteries if they degredate too far. It certainly was the case that Renault zoe always leased the batteries for this reason (leaf I think you had to buy them)

Personally I prefer the zoe, my DH prefers the leaf. They both accelerate like bullets.

Two of the slowest accelerating electric cars you can get. Very disappointing. The BMW i3 is worth looking at. Drives well, nice place to be. Not exactly a ball of fire but will leave a Zoe or Leaf for dead.
