Everything looks shit on 4K TV!

Got a new fancy TV

Everything I watch on it looks like a shitty episode of hollyoaks or something. Just watching Poldark and it looks like a low budget straight to video production for school history classes. Do you know what I mean?

Why does everything look so rubbish??

Why was the telly 4K out of interest? Is it meant to be really crisp?

Hobbes8 · 16/10/2021 22:04

I know exactly what you mean! I was watching my cousin’s new tv and it was like you could see all the special effects that are normally seamless. It reminded me of watching an 80s version of the worst witch where a character started flying on a broomstick and you could practically see the joins between the character and the background.

She said you get used to it after a while but it put me right off upgrading my 10 year old telly.

FuckingFabulous · 16/10/2021 22:04

I assume so- my husband bought it. But everything looks really crap on it

It’s awful isn’t it! Don’t worry though, you do get used to it very quickly. You’ve just reminded me of it but I hadn’t thought about it for ages

Yes!! Everything just looks..... tacky and cheap.

It soon wears off. When we got our new tv I was raging about how awful it made everything look, even big budget films. You could just tell everything was a set, it was like watching a stage show. You could almost see the extras muttering “rhubarb rhubarb” as they milled around. After a few weeks it just becomes normal and I only ever notice it for a day or two if I’ve been away and been watching a more basic tv.

donkey86 · 16/10/2021 22:15

It’s a setting, you should be able to turn it off www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/what-is-the-soap-opera-effect-in-tvs-and-how-to-turn-it-off/%3famp

NiceGerbil · 16/10/2021 22:16

You need to watch things recorded on decent old style films etc.

From about the... 90s or something? Many filmmakers switched to digital. While fine for cinema etc (good as probably) it is s different way to film and not nearly so detailed. When on super high Def it looks worse than on lower as it's just not detailed enough to be viewed that way.

Ditto more recent TV progs since digital and I have a feeling TV was even on film done not so high quality so that usually looks crap too.

So watch those on lower definition/ don't pay for super hd as more money and looks worse!

Try an old film like. Erm. Mind gone blank. How to marry a millionaire (great film!). Singing in the rain. Erm. You know. Anything old. Or even 70s I'd think.

It is incredible. Honestly give it a go. Proper film with decent budget made for cinema. Even just 5 mins you will see :)

Betsythecheshirecat · 16/10/2021 22:16

@Dahliadelight I think 4k is the picture quality rather than the price.

I know exactly what you mean op! My friends TV is one of these and I found it really distracting.

Mysterian · 16/10/2021 22:18

This is why they had to build a new set for Eastenders. In 4k you could see the last one was a set.

userxx · 16/10/2021 22:20

4k is picture quality, not the price. That would be a ridiculously expensive tv!

wolfstarling · 16/10/2021 22:27

Yes it is too real and ruins films...for the first month and then... as if by magic it looks like a real film again!

SardineJam · 16/10/2021 22:29

Change the settings, we had this on our TV and once we played around it was way better. It's a Samsung and was set on 'dynamic', we changed it to 'natural'

ColourHex · 16/10/2021 22:32

its called the soap opera effect - you can turn it off. Just google your make of tv and turn off soap opera effect. its usually called auto motion or something

woodhill · 16/10/2021 22:33

Yes everything looks like a studio on our smart tv, no grainy film effects itms

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/10/2021 22:36

I agree. Everything looks unconvincing because you can see the orange makeup on the villain's face, and you can see where they positioned the lights for the deathbed scene...it all looks like Acorn Antiques.

Nesbo · 16/10/2021 22:42

How are there people who still don’t know about this?

It has nothing to do with it being 4K, it is related to the frame rate. As lots of people have said, you just change a setting and things stop looking like a soap opera.

Dahliadelight · 16/10/2021 22:44

Oh yes, I totally thought OP had spent £4,000 on a telly. Blush You never know these days.

🙄

Dreadfully sorry for not being tech savvy.

I know there is a problem with Oled TV’s and upscaling. I love my tech and gadgets and bought the LG Oled when it came out. It was terrible. Scenes were laggy, programmes recorded in SD were awful to watch (and I watch a lot of old programmes), everything was darker no matter what picture settings I chose. I was so disappointed. Thankfully I was able to get a full refund and settled on a trusty Sony. HD and UHD content on it are good, I can’t say that I’ve noticed set scenes at all.

What size screen is the TV OP? I think larger screens can make upscaling look worse.

True, my eyes were watering in curry's the other day!

Chinsupmeloves · 21/09/2025 21:16
