Ringworm exposure

Posted in small pets but no replies. We have new guinea pigs who’ve come with ringworm. We have them started on treatment with a good vet and taking all the hygiene precautions.
The DC played with the guinea pigs for a couple of days before we realised and started ringworm treatment.
Anyone had anything similar? Any chance we might escape getting ringworm ourselves? I’m so paranoid. DM just finished chemo so I’m scared to pass anything on, but finding it hard to keep away. It’s been 5 days so think we have a little way to go before we know if we’ve caught it.

I caught ringworm off a foster dog once, by the time I realised what it was I already had a pretty bad infection! My DP only got 1 or two sores which was a lot less than me.

So perhaps your DC will be lucky and escape it.

Look out for the signs (mine started as what looked like mosquito bites) so you can treat it straight away if you do get it and it should disappear quickly. Once I started treating mine it was gone after a few days.

Maybe take some preventative measures now like dropping some tea tree oil in your bath (it’s an anti fungal) and sure you’re having plenty of vitamin C as well to keep your immune system up.

Also - I knew the dog had ringworm but (very stupidly) didn’t realise humans could catch it so was playing with her and letting her sleep on me for a good two weeks before I noticed anything on me.

A few days and you might be okay!

Oh no - one of the boys does have a couple of tiny pin prick sized red dots appear on forearm. I was hoping that wouldn’t be it… but sounds like that’s how it starts. Thank you. I couldn’t see anything on line as to what the very early stages look like.

This was what it looked like at the beginning for me

The scabs were from itching

If it is ringworm at least you’ve caught it early!

Thank you redtshirt50 - this has helped me realise youngest dc prob does have it… as we’d feared.
Started the cream. Wonder if this means it won’t get too bad? He’s a scratcher tho - grrr.
Gutted - there’s little spots on his arm and face - seems like they’re growing… maybe I’m imagining it. Damn tho!

Try not to scratch, it can spread that way so easily, using a cream like E45 can help with the itching. I'd put him in long sleeves and pj bottoms for bed so he can't scratch in his sleep. Wash all bedding daily and don't share towels.

Son still has red spots on his arms that look like the pic redtshirt50 posted. The spots have not got any worse though, after 10 days or so, but equally they’re not shifting. Could this still be ringworm? We’re using canesten. will it still be contagious with the cream going on 3x day? Really worried about the other pets… trying to keep them separate but not always possible.
