Dinner party going wrong and got a lot of chicken marinading in the fridge!

So for context my BF texts me earlier in the week to invite me to a dinner party on Friday with mutual friends. I gladly accept the invitation. Within hours she says she can't host as they are having an advert filmed at their house till 7pm. I say no problem, I will host - I've been meaning to invite all the invitees to mine. So today I went and did all my shopping for the dinner party - stuffed mushrooms, a chicken main and almond citrus cake with fruit and vanilla yoghurt, wine. Because of the recipe I chose I've got a lot of chicken now marinading in the fridge.

For reference I've just been made redundant from my job (high level executive) and although I've got a decent redundancy I am concerned about how long I can survive whilst I'm busy applying for jobs. Short version: I'm not free with my money right now

Tonight it starts to unravel. Advert venue wondering if they will make it because the filming might overrun. They might be late. The other couple both have heavy colds and are uncertain if they will make it. Maybe one will.

So no one's faults but feeling a bit meh. I just rang my BF and she and partner (ad venue) still plan to come - she might be a bit late. I'm sure it will all work out one way or another, and I know its no ones fault, but I'm feeling a bit spent cash and energy wise.

Not sure what I'm posting for. I can freeze what's not eaten mostly. Just a bit frustrated. Had a glass or two to sympathise with myself.

@Bouledeneige......
Your menu sounds yummy!
I'll come! 😋

Oh my! Lucky I drank some wine. Otherwise I'd think some of you are unsympathetic arseholes. Still I expect you semantic expert's can afford to spent £100 or more on wasted food. Sadly, I've only had 3 published cookery books so I don't know about that stuff.

So my plan is. check in with folks at lunchtime. Prep chicken in panko. Prep mushrooms and stuffing. Bake cake. Check in again. If no good news: Eat chicken and cake. Give mushrooms to the poor.

OP, if it goes tits up just freeze the bloody chicken and just cook and eat the mushrooms, plus wine. Its money saving, see, because the wine will go to your head so you won't need to drink as much Grin

Plus wine and cake that should say.

Sorry for going off topic. It all sounds delicious. Sounds like you've got everything in hand. I'm sure they'll show up and if they don't, I'd be very happy to pop round. Oh, and I'll do tasting for your fourth book as well. 😉 Have a great evening tomorrow.

Sometimes the best nights are ones when you think it’s all going to go wrong (clutches at straws) and worst case scenario you will have some lovely food to defrost.
What is the advert for? Is their house amazing?

It's not the John Lewis kid trashing their house, is it?

sadie9 · 15/10/2021 00:08

I would cook all the chicken tomorrow then freeze it in smaller portions. Its more useful cooked than it is great frozen lumps of raw chicken in the freezer.
In hindsight did you jump in quite quickly and offer to take over the dinner party?

Come again? That needs more explanation.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 15/10/2021 00:35

Sorry but just to say that a dinner party guest having an advert filmed at their house is absolute 100% classic MN. (As is a pointless nitpicking argument about language 🙄🙄🙄).

Sorry you’re feeling down OP. I hope the evening turns out jolly OR they all cancel and you can spend the evening eating cake on the sofa, whichever most appeals to you.

My sympathies op. The last dinner I hosted only 2/3 arrived. An hour late, drunk, on diets, empty handed and worse, didn't thank me!
I was on a low wage and the picked at, wasted food really irked me.

Enjoy the wine and cake and I loved the derail. Marinade is a noun who knew Gin
