Someone help me finally leave the 1970's behind in our lounge. Is white the way to go?

All the swirly carpets, curtains, colours & anagylptas are finally gone but I think they might have damaged my eyesight and decision-making Grin

North facing lounge & dining room knocked into one. 1930's, so not huge, but long.

I need light & airy. Ceiling & above picture rail will be white. Has anyone painted a room like this all plain white & regretted it? Will it be too harsh? Maybe an off-white of some sort (with warm tones) without it looking too yellow or magnolia? But which one?!

Room would be filled with a mish mash of our different coloured stuff from Gumtree, plus plants.

I got lots of white paint samples off Freecycle. I'm looking at Light & Space, Timeless, Morning Light, Jasmine White, White tie, James White, House White No 2012 etc Confused

I'm drowning......

What did you do?

I have painted my entire interior except the bathroom in Timeless by Dulux as I have no imagination. It's a gentle ivory colour, very neutral. I personally do find bright white too much, except in the bathroom.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 14/10/2021 18:53

I have Egyptian Cotton by Dulux in two rooms.

Not quite white. And it changes quite dramatically in different light.

The key with selecting white paint is thinking about undertones, so I'd think about the furniture and decor options that you want to pair it with.

Whites with cool undertones work well with cooler colours like blue or bolder shades. Whites with warmer undertones create a more cosy feel, especially if you've got lots of natural materials in your decorations. If you go for a pure or bright white, it's usually because you want to go for contrast and have quite bold colors in the room.

Timeless is really nice PermanentTemporary, I am very tempted to do the same to the rest of the place!

Mmm. Yeah, I don't really want to be permanently wearing sunglasses

TheLightSideOfTheMoon I can't find any Egyptian Cotton here in my stash Shock What if that's the perfect colour?!!!

I do like the idea of it changing colour in different lights! Smile Might have to go and get a sample?

I have had Egyptian cotton and it got quite murky looking after a while...

TheLadyGrayson · 14/10/2021 19:05

I’ve got jasmine white in an east facing 1930s living room, it’s just warm enough not to be harsh, really like it.

WhiteWhiteWhite · 14/10/2021 19:07

Tuning into undertones now MouseholeCat Grin We have a right mish mash of colours and currently a Gumtree rug which is mainly reds, so maybe it won't feel too harsh?

I do prefer natural materials and hoping for more plants.

Another vote for Timeless! I knew you'd all have great ideas, thank you Grin

The Dulux Visualiser app is very good at showing what a colour will look like in the light in the room.

Amrythings · 14/10/2021 19:09

We have Dulux White Mist through the living room and eventually hall/landing, it's got a very slight cool pink tinge that keeps it from being too harsh with navy soft furnishings and walnut floors, and bounces back the sunset beautifully when we get one!

WhiteWhiteWhite · 14/10/2021 19:10

Oh, I don't really want murky back Opal8 Sad

Thanks for sharing.

Good choice TheLadyGrayson! We have Jasmine in our east facing bathroom and it seems to have worked out well.

A bit further round on the compass point & thought it might need a little something else? Grin

I painted our last 1920s house entirely pure brilliant white. But I do like 'clean' rather than muted colours so had things like a cherry red cabinet or a shocking pink blind or grass green duvet covers (not all in thesame room, each room was basically white walls, wooden floor and lots of wooden furniture plus one major colourful item and (literally) a couple of accessories that matched.

WhiteWhiteWhite · 14/10/2021 19:13

WeAreTheHeroes Thank you! Had completely forgotten about visualiser stuff. Durr!

Oh no! I don't have Dulux Scotch Mist either Amrythings Confused. That sounds beautiful, especially the sunset bit. At high summer, we have a tiny peak of sunset.

Great thread. I have a smallish new build white throughout but needs repainting. Lots of great advice!

OldTinHat · 14/10/2021 19:17

My entire house is painted white with colour accents with throws, towels, cushions, what have you.

WhiteWhiteWhite · 14/10/2021 19:18

That sounds fab JaninaDuszejko! You sound braver than me. I like colours, but probably a bit more muted.

I like nature colours especially, blues, greens, yellows, browns etc

Pure white @OldTinHat?

I think I'm worried about being blinded Grin

Yes another vote for timeless. My house is also totally timeless and it saves all those odd tins of paint hanging round in the garage. Grin
