and connective tissue, and meat slurry?
It appears to be a huuuuge industry.
Im really curious about this.
I only eat a bit of (from raw) cooked chicken or mackerel, so possibly not in the market for slurry, but what food is it going into?

I was reading about traditional world foods on wiki and then unwittingly stumbled down this weird hole, it all sounds pretty ghastly, but where is it and what do you think?
Do you partake?

It will be in all sorts of packaged, processed stuff at the supermarket. Sausages, nuggets, burgers, all the cheaper stuff. I've probably eaten plenty of it in a lifetime, but it's not something I'd seek out.

We should be eating as much of the animal as possible, but there are traditional cooking methods to do this.

Hot dog sausages are the worst offenders. Yes I agree we should be using all of the animal. But Fido and Tiddles can eat that shite thank you very much.

Thanks, I was imagining nuggets but had deluded myself about sausages. I do agree with eating as much of the animal as possible (organ means not as fashionable in the west now but are supposed to be very, very good for us) but I do wonder about the cheaper, more ultra processed stuff and what's hiding in it!

It's not like they'd put 'slurry' on an ingredient list.

Can anyone tell me (asking for DP as he loves a sausage) what is a cheap sausage? Is it merely reflected in the price or is there a way to determine beyond this? Some 'shite' is quite expensive, ive learned.

Jamie Oliver did a programme years ago about the process of MRM to show children how their chicken nuggets are most likely to be made. It was absolutely revolting.

Ham. It’s practically impossible to find actual ham these days, you need to find a deli or deli counter- sainsbury’s have just removed ours..

Read the packets- all ham is “formed ham” - ie the recovered bits squished together into a ham like substance.

It's true that liver is very good for you. It's one of the most nutritionally dense foods available. Just a shame that I'd rather eat my own eyeballs. Grin

I think Richmond sausages would count as cheap ones. Think they’re only 42% meat.

It's how meat is removed from the bones to ensure nothing is wasted. It's meat, just as offal etc is. We have a choice, you can buy whole steaks, chops etc and you can buy cheap sausages and nuggets. Removing that option means some families would struggle to buy food

I watched one of those ‘food factory’ type programmes about Heck sausages. It showed the production process from start to finish. The ingredients were huge hunks of pork shoulder minced up, seasoned and stuffed into skins. That’s all. I was so impressed I bought a pack the next day.

The whole process is pretty grim. An animal died to provide us with meat.

Unless there is another genuine, workable way of getting all the meat from the carcass, it will continue. We slaughter millions of animals a year in this country for meat. Think how many more we would have to slaughter if we only ate the nice bits. Don't waste any of it.

I say this as a meat eater.

I work for a poultry manufacture. Our MSM is meat skimmed off of the carcass. It doesn't look pleasant but it's regulated and tested and has to meet standards just like any other meat

We should be using as much of every animal we (as a species) kill as possible.

I eat meat- not often - and I keep chickens. I have had to kill a couple of chickens before and plucked, gutted and ate them. It made me much more aware of them as a living creature and I value the animals I eat much more highly now.

I don't peel veg because I don't want to waste perfectly good food. Why would I throw away bits of animal?

Let's not. Urgh. Vegan for two years. Not originally from a welfare pov (though I now get that high ground by default😁) but realising that we eat animals that have literally lived knee deep in their own shit and piss and pus from sores and abscesses, eating it while trying to clean themselves, cannibalising each other out of stress, pus filled milk and cheese...I don't want any products from that grim dirty background in my body. 🤢

this is awful and is a separate issue to what they are putting in with the meat. Over consumption I suppose, it's depressing. I try to buy organic chicken but I still don't feel happy about animal husbandry. If only we valued the creatures we feed on more.

As I get older more and more I can't justify eating meat. For myself. My DH and dd have to come to their own conclusions.

Fucking love hot dogs though and they are vile really.

Is there a vegetarian hot dog with the same taste?
