What’s the best sweetener nowadays?

Don’t tell me to learn to like it without- I don’t
Don’t tell me that sweeteners are the devil- they’re not! Wink

I used to drink tea sweetened with honey, but for various reasons (lockdown, an ill-fated pregnancy, a running injury) I put on a lot of weight and had to cut it out. I was probably drinking 500 calories of honey a day. Confused

The weather is changing and I long for a cup of tea- but I can’t go back to my honey ways.

What sweeteners do you use? I bought a honey ‘zero sugar syrup’ and it was rancid. Envy (not envy)

Thanks for any replies!

Oh, and I can’t just have a bit of honey as I am a compulsive tea drinker. I’ll drink about 6-8 cups!

I use xylitol and erythritol and can't tell the difference from ordinary granulated sugar.

bruffin · 13/10/2021 08:32

Just reduce the honey over time and your tastebuds will adapt surprisingly quickly and it will start to taste too sweet
There are 21calories per tsp of honey. So are you really having as much as you think you are

I like splenda and also stevia ( Morrison's own brand ).

dementedpixie · 13/10/2021 08:37

A teaspoon of sugar is only 16 calories which is less than the honey. Its also easy to gradually cut sugar down

lemonyfox · 13/10/2021 08:51

You can get granulated erithryitol or a blend of erithryitol/stevia which is super sweet and the texture is just like normal granulated sugar. It's a very good replacement to sugar and has minimal impact on your spiking blood sugars too, as a bonus.

My favourite is silver spoon followed by the red Canderel

MalteseBubs · 13/10/2021 09:02

I use it for coffee as I can't drink it without

MalteseBubs · 13/10/2021 09:02

Well I can but I just don't like it.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 13/10/2021 09:05

Stevia is the only non-bad one, I think. If you cut down on sugar in your tea, slowly and gradually, you will go off it.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/10/2021 09:12

Be aware that some of these, eg xylitol give you the runs if you have too much of it.

bruffin · 13/10/2021 13:37

Stevia is just as bad, gives a weird mouth feel and is over sweet.

I have generous teaspoons, definitely not level. It’s probably working out as about 60 cals a cup of tea. I usually drink about 5+ cups!

I’ll try some of these.

Have you tried Puresweet Zero? I bought some and was very impressed. Not cheap though.

peridito · 14/10/2021 08:17

Puresweet sounds good .Apparently it's erythritol ( mentioned upthread) which has good reviews .

No doubt this review is funded by the makers but still, might be worth a read
