Which is the best model to get and why?

Are they all designed to be used outside only?

The best model for you depends on what sort of fuel you usually have around. I have a Karu 12 because I bbq a lot and almost always have lumpwood charcoal and wood chunks around. A lot of people prefer the convenience of the gas models because they don’t need to be topped up with fuel while using and you get more control on the temperature.

Yes they must all be used outside due to the carbon monoxide risk. They are not safety rates for inside use.

Thanks.

Do they need a cover for winter?

Enjoy OP they’re fantastic

Kezzie200 · 12/10/2021 09:50

Or do you bring them in when cold and not in use?

Getting one for Christmas!

We have one OP and they're amazing. We use the special wood chips they recommend and it certainly gets more than hot enough. Ours came with a proper cover/bag which has fabric handles for carrying when camping or whatever. You just take the chimney off to pack it all away and it lives in the garage when not in use. We love it, lovely home-made pizzas cooked in about 90 seconds.

We have a duel fuel one, you can use either gas or wood. It’s very new to us and have only used it once (with gas). It’s great. Gets v hot v quickly and pizzas cook in minutes

@Kezzie200 I used to put mine in the garage but I built an outdoor kitchen last summer which shelters it from the worst of the elements so I don't bother with a cover now. I live in the SE so our winters aren't that cold and we don't really get much rain. The main reason for covering or putting inside is to stop the stone from getting damp or cold enough so that when you next light it the stone shatters from the temperature differential.

I bought the Karu for my husband for Christmas 2019 and we cook on it most weekends. We still make the odd mistake with the dough so be prepared for a bit of a learning curve but it's all part of the fun.

If you get the bbq one, doesn't it take an age to get going and you lose the convenience of a 90 second pizza a bit?

Do you think the pizza tastes different if you use wood rather than gas?

Yeah good luck getting one in time for Christmas. I ordered one in Sept, looking to ship in November if they get stock. They were super quick to take the money though!!

Kezzie200 · 12/10/2021 14:00

Ahh fair enough. I don't mind waiting tbh as I will use it more in the spring and later, but I need a good reason to order one and Christmas gives me that opportunity!

Hope yours arrives soon.

I use a propane torch to get the Karu going and can be sitting at 450 degrees in around 15 mins. It took longer to get going when I was still working out the best combo of fuel and exactly how much to use. As I said, this is fuel I have in anyway so it’s convenient to me but I know that for many people it isn’t. I also had the propane torch for lighting the bbq so I didn’t have to buy any new equipment.

I probably wouldn’t buy the pellet one just because the gas is just a touch more convenient and you get next to no wood smoke taste on the pizza in 90 seconds.
