DNA Ancestry test kits

My dad is impossible to buy presents for but he's recently taken a lot of interest in his family history and I thought one of these kits would be fun for his birthday.

I know they're just for fun and reliability is dubious, but that's OK.

However Dad is extremely cautious about privacy and personal data, so I'm unsure how keen he'll be to send his DNA in the post.

If you feel the same, would you do it?

There is no privacy at all - that is the whole point of the tests - to build up a huge data bank which is what the next person to buy a test is tapping in to.

I guess, just ask him if its what he wants.

They are fairly pointless

I wouldn't. I'm very interested in family history and I have a couple of dead ends but I wouldn't feel comfortable with the test or letting other people search against it.

You don't have to link your data to your account, so can take it and not have it matched to you publicly. You can also set all your privacy settings pretty high in ancestry itself too.

Exactly. It's your choice.
