Children's sport mouthguards - losing my mind!

Niche/boring topic I know but, has anyone ever successfully fitted a boil and bite mouthguard to their eg 7/8/9 year old, where it actually stays in when they open their mouth?

I must have spent close to £100 on various mouthguards over the last three years, of all different types from the basic boil and bite, to the ones with gel inside you bite into, to the supposedly clip in, fits all (which in hindsight is obviously bollocks).

All I get at best is a seemingly perfectly indented mouthguard which immediately falls off the teeth when my daughter opens her mouth. We do the pressing, the teeth sucking sucking etc etc.

Please for the love of god someone tell me the secret to achieving this dastardly task!! (Or tell me that, actually, no one achieves this and hockey pitches and rugby fields are actually full of kids clenching their teeth together to hold the damn thing in...) 🙏

Try opro. They are usually pretty good. I think they do the ones you heat up. They also will send you a self mould kit which they make the mouthguard from. Or they do visits to some clubs / schools to take the moulds. That's how we've got ours in the past. We normally get a new one each year as the children's teeth have fallen out/grown through. My girls have never had a problem with them falling out. (And they do some very cool designs!) Not cheap, but worth every penny.

Failing that, pre covid, many dentists would take moulds and make them. Not sure if that's still happening?

I’ve done dozens of the bastard things and they never stay in! Opro is a better option, although DD insisted the mould process was the very worst thing that has ever happened to her!

I doubt they are covered on the NHS but a dentist should be able to provide a well-fitting one.

You need to get a proper one fitted. Opro go to the schools. Cost more but last week and fit properly

Boil and bite ones aren't even half as good, even the opro ones.

But isn't a constantly changing mouth an obstacle to a professionally fitted one? I read somewhere that a properly fitted (ha!) boil and bite is better, as you can redo them every couple of months as teeth come out and in. But perhaps I should just throw money at the dentist, rather than into the ever expanding graveyard of sad DIY mouth guards.

Opro is the only one I've found that works, they usually come out to schools or sports clubs. Failing that they have an impression kit. They are not cheap, I think I paid £70 last time.

We use our dentist. I think it was about forty or fifty pounds. We just had tears with boil and bite.

Getting a dentist appt for that now might be tricky though.

balloonsintrees · 12/10/2021 07:05

Our rugby club have a special deal with a local dentist to have it moulded etc.
14 year old off later for the scan and each of them have lasted about 18 months with no problems (new one each rugby season and the old one gets down graded to use at school).
Well worth every penny!

My daughter has found Sisu to be the best ones and they do go back to flat to be remoulded. She wears them for rugby and roller Derby.

GoWalkabout · 12/10/2021 07:58

I remember it being tricky but we got there in the end. They were barely used so an annoying expense.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/10/2021 08:08

Both my kids have terrible teeth and small mouths. I have had them professionally made at the dentist for years. The DIY ones just don’t work for us. Costs quite a bit but I can’t risk them having teeth knocked out. Sad
