Things to do in Sheffield?

Were coming for football in a few weeks time. Contrary to popular belief that football fans are all drunken louts, we do usually try and see a bit of whatever city we're in. Recent trips have included visiting caves, museums and a treasure hunt, plus we usually squeeze in time for a pint or two of local ale.

I usually use the Top Ten attractions on Trip Advisor, but it's struggling for Sheffield. The one that did catch my eye, a museum on Kellham Island, is closed on Saturdays.

Is there really nothing to see in Sheffield with all it's industrial heritage?

If anyone can recommend a walking tour, that would be good too.

Oh we're travelling by train, happy to walk 40 min or so, but it does need to be reasonably central.

Sheffield is my favourite city! The city centre is quite small as meadowhall caused it to decentralise a lot but architecture is beautiful.

Walking up from the train station is lovely, then there are a couple of galleries. The millennium gallery leads to the winter gardens which is an indoor giant greenhouse. There are loads of posh coffee shops. Then into the main shopping bit but there are more leisure / restaurants than shops. The peace gardens outside city hall. The city hall is spectacular. The university quarter and the arts tower has a paternoster lift but I've never been.

Outside the city centre is eccleshall road which is a more suburban but has nice bars and restaurant (mowgli).

Further afield is either the Yorkshire sculpture park or the Peak District and Hatchersage had Lido or lots of gorgeous walks - Mam tor is my favourite.

Kelham island often has events on at the weekend like craft fairs.

Just seen in train so scrap peaks or ysp.

The gold route linked above is a good starting point.

www.visitmagna.co.uk/getting-here/

This is ace, especially if you have kids with you. You would have to take a bus but doable

Don't know opening times but my DC like the emergency services museum and the national video games museum.

Gag1964 · 11/10/2021 10:06

Do they still do the football tour? Anyone remember what it's called?
If you like football Sheffield did a tour of the historic bits, my brother rated it and he's hard to please.

Botanical gardens

vampirethriller · 11/10/2021 10:21

Weston Park museum, Heeley city farm, Graves Park farm, galleries in town, Botanical gardens
All close enough to the city centre to walk except Graves Park which is about 20 minutes by bus or driving

There’s a lovely pub in the station with its own brewery if you like ale.
Millennium gallery and winter gardens are a short walk up the hill from the station. Also newly renovated graves art gallery is worth a visit. Walk through the winter gardens to get to the peace gardens and see the old town hall.
Shame Kelham island museum is closed. You could visit the canal basin and there’s a new area around the old castle market, called castlegate. There was a festival in sept to launch it www.sheffield.gov.uk/castlegatefestival this website shows some details though obviously the events have finished.
There are some great canteen street food style places to try in town- Kommune and a new one in orchard square.
We enjoy escape rooms- lots in Sheffield. Also could explore some of the shops around Devonshire street if you have teens or there are the usual high street shops on the moor and fargate.
Weston park museum is walkable - but just out the centre past the uni- would prob take about 30-40 minutes to walk from the station.

Yes Sheffield tap in the station is a must!

Brefugee · 11/10/2021 11:42

have only ever been in the car but the Weston Park museum is good, as is Bishop House

Kiduknot · 11/10/2021 12:00

I might have to visit. It’s fairly close to us.

Just small things like sausage rolls etc I think.

cherrypiepie · 12/10/2021 19:28

I always have a fruit beer and a packet of pipers crisps. Instagram suggests they do pork pies and sausage rolls!
