Positive lateral flow, control line came up straight away

Ds 12 felt under the weather yesterday. Temp of 38.8, sniffles and a cough. I gave him paracetamol last night and decided to test with a lateral flow this morning.

The line came up straight away as positive even as the test dye was spreading across the test. I was a bit shocked ( I don't know why ) so I took another one, I took a photo of both and of the one after ten seconds as it was developing ( you can clearly see the line ).

What I was wondering is there has been lots in the news about positive lateral flow tests and then followed by a negative pcr test please can anyone tell me if this has happened to them at all?

We are all so far so good, Dh, Dd 29 and smallest ds 8 - I form really want him to get it because he has been hospitalised with his chest and asthma issues before now.

Ds12 also has asthma so I'm keeping an eye but he seems on in the main apart from the temp, sniffles and cough.

He's booked in for a pcr at 11, I was just wondering what the chances are if him being negative after a positive lateral flow are? Has anyone had this? Thank you all

I think your attitude is fabulous OP. Positivity radiating from you. I think you and your family will be absolutely fine. Each day is one step closer to being over it. Keep you your lovely outlook and get some treats for those boys (and yourself). Flowers

Yes my son was the same, he tested positive on a lateral flow test, it came up straight away and was strongley positive it was confirmed with a positive PCR test On the plus side, he felt rough only for a couple of days, and just needed paracetamol, neither myself nor my husband or our other son caught it off him, dh and i are fully vaccinated, we live in a small two bedroom house with one bathroom, so he isolated as much as he could, but lack of space made it hard.

Thanks @SummerHouse what will be will be worn it, no point making things worse and stressing.

They've both gone off with their dad for a pcr. I've let their school know, they will be the first with it if the pcr is positive.

As previously mentioned I'm going to act as if they are positive even if the pcr comes back negative ( unlikely ) as there is no point spreading it around even more.

Incidentally what's the usual time scale for the results to come back? It's 24 hrs isn't it?

Also how long after you've tested positive are children supposed to stay off? No hurry to get them back but I wondered how long they stay infectious for ( I know I can google this but was wondering about personal experiences too? )

Thanks so much for all the info, it's been really helpful Smile

My line was faint on both lateral flows but came back positive on he PCR. I think the negative PCR thing is just in the south west? It's false negatives with lateral flows that are the worry.

I think its ten days, we all had to isolate when my son tested positive, but it was at the start of the summer holidays and the rules hadent changed at that point, its up to 72 for a PCR test to come back, but it can be a lot quicker.
x2boys · 11/10/2021 11:29

If the results are positive test and trace will be in touch and they will give you a date that they have to isolate too.

bonbonours · 11/10/2021 11:30

Mine came up.instantly when I was positive too. Unlikely to be neg on pCR I think

Wagsandclaws · 11/10/2021 11:31

I'm in the south west ( mendips ) I'll just take it as they both have it.

Ds1 who tested strongly positive this morning has the cough, the temp and s super snotty nose whereas ds2 ( my 8 yo ) you wouldn't know anything was up.

The lateral flows have been quite good in this instance, so far me, Dh and Dd who is 29 have all tested negative - long may that continue!

It's great to see positive stories on here about people all living in the same house and not catching it. I was under the impression ( perhaps falsely ) that the double jab didn't stop you from catching it but that it made your symptoms less severe.

Hoglet70 · 11/10/2021 11:37

Husband and I both have it and both double jabbed. He's been really not well. I'm full of cold and feel really ropey but felt worse. DS16 in tiny two bed house with us, all sharing same bathroom etc, still resolutely testing negative. He isn't jabbed yet.

Wagsandclaws · 11/10/2021 11:59

@Hoglet70 gosh I hope that continues fir you don and I do hope that you and DH are in the mend very soon! Thanks

My DD also tested positive over the weekend, I was really surprised as she didn't have symptoms initially (does now!) and her PCR was negative - I've ordered a home PCR kit instead of doing another drive-through, we are in Gloucestershire. She's tested positive for three days now so I'm thinking she has COVID! Similar to you, really strong positive immediately. Hope your children are OK.

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 11/10/2021 12:07

I had a positive lateral flow this morning and so headed off for a PCR. I don’t have symptoms other than a bit of a blocked nose.

I took a second lateral flow a few hours later which was negative so not sure if it was a dodgy test this morning. Will see what the PCR results say.

Postal test seems like a much better bet than a test centre one if you are in the SW. they seem to be less likely to have the ‘false negative’ issue.
Nonamenoplacetogo · 11/10/2021 13:33

My ds had a strong lateral flow yesterday, mine was negative but got a faint positive this morning. We now both have symptoms abs have been for pcr tests. Also in SW and we have had staff at the school I work at have positive lft and negative pcr who have come back in.

AtillatheHun · 11/10/2021 13:40

@EnglishRose1320 @mumsie8 how did you keep your covid child isolated from the other(s)? How stringent were you about keeping the one with covid hidden in their bedroom?

MeredithMae · 11/10/2021 14:30

Well done on the weight loss OP! (Sorry I know that's not the point of this thread).

Sorry but definitely positive I'd say!

DS11 had it recently, he had a few headaches and lost his smell but that's it. None of us (me, wife, his dad and housemate where he spends weekends) caught it, we're all double jabbed.

OwlKey · 11/10/2021 16:12

I’m in the SW too. DS11 started with symptoms (fever, headache, blocked nose, sore throat, etc,) on Thursday, strongly positive lateral flow and then the pcr he took on Friday came back positive on Saturday.
I am fully vaccinated and have been unwell in bed since yesterday with 3 clearly positive lateral flows so far, but my pcr (yesterday) has come back negative. I went for another this morning but even if that comes back negative, I am certain I have it and will be acting accordingly. I’ve ordered a postal test to do just in case. I feel very fluey, have a high temp, headache, cough, loss of taste, blocked nose, muscle aches, etc.
Husband, fully vaccinated, has no symptoms, a couple of very faint positive lateral flows yesterday but negative pcr so I think he either has it asymptomatically or not at all.
DS15 hasn’t has his vaccination yet and is (so far) fine.
Hope you are all ok and it isn’t with you for long.

ChicCroissant · 13/10/2021 22:02

Just coming back to update that after my DD's negative drive-through PCR at the weekend, a postal one has come back positive. Not a total shock as she's been in bed for days now feeling terrible.
