In our house it is the LAW to say

lovablequalities · 10/10/2021 21:27

"Basil!" in a screech à la Sybil

"Brown sugar!" In the style of Mick Jagger.

"Mangetout, Rodney, mangetout!" à la Only Fools.

OR

"What the hell is Mang-e-tout?!" À la the (American) boyfriend of a pal of mine who had never heard of it.

"Aubergine!" In a horrified tone in memory of DD2 when offered some.

What foodie (or otherwise) catchphrases do you have?

Turn to page 394 - Snape

SickAndTiredAgain · 10/10/2021 21:30

@Rabidturnip

Turn to page 394 - Snape
We do “Obviously” like Snape.
FlatterNow · 10/10/2021 21:33

'When I was a young warthog' when telling a story about the past. If done correctly, the person you are talking to should then sing it back to you, operatically.

SylvanasWindrunner · 10/10/2021 21:34

Gaahlic bread ala Peter Kay. I'm sure there are more but can't think!

RoseDog · 10/10/2021 21:34

Mangetout in our house is "man get out"

overthethamesfromyou · 10/10/2021 21:36

Henry 8th is known as Henry Vill (rhymes with Will)

SickAndTiredAgain · 10/10/2021 21:39

And of course “PIVOT” whenever moving furniture.

SW1amp · 10/10/2021 21:40

Spuds, we have to say ‘potatoes, they’ll all covered in mud’ in a northern accent which was from a crisp advert from before any of us were born but it’s stuck

And ‘oil’ has to be said in an Irish accent so it sounds like ‘I’ll’ from a silly meme from years ago

And wine is yucky juice, which is what DS named it when he was about 3, after trying to grab a glass and being told he wouldn’t like it, because it’s not nice juice, it’s yucky
It’s stuck

Justmuddlingalong · 10/10/2021 21:40

If someone farts "I'll name that tune in 3."

Funnylittlefloozie · 10/10/2021 21:40

We say cob-on-the-corn in loving memory of Uncle Harold, who was as nutty as squirrel poo, and always described this particular vegetable thus.

HairyScaryMonster · 10/10/2021 21:40

If DH or I say 'love you', the other says 'love U2... especially bono'

TheWholeWorld · 10/10/2021 21:41

A small aubergine..!

We also say 'mangetout, Rodney, mangetout' in our house Grin

merryhouse · 10/10/2021 21:41

We do Basil too

Tell us - sing it four times as in Dido and Aeneas (niche, I know)

Who can tell? - sung from Princess Ida (even more niche)

When bringing out the Pringles - "Pri!" (from S1

Ididanamechange · 10/10/2021 21:42

Weetabix as A-bix thanks to ds and cheese on toast is cheesy toes
If somethings in another room we say "what? You gotta go there?" after a really old herbal essences advert
Fungle nail cream is called fungle Mary after I misheard dh one time.

PL15namechange · 10/10/2021 21:42

We I do 'Basil!' and 'Mangetout' in a Del Boy voice.

I always say 'it is I, Leclerc' (allo allo) when I call DF.

DB and I say 'as was the style at the time' (grandpa Simpson)

Also, malapropisms. Spatlea for spatula. Ambleance. Condescension for condensation. 'its not the heat, its the humility'. Sometimes I say them to people I don't know well, and then have to decide whether to let them think I'm a muppet, or explain I was being daft... So am therefore a muppet...Blush

BeastOfBODMAS · 10/10/2021 21:43

“It won’t suit you” if anyone says they’re going to put the kettle on

titchy · 10/10/2021 21:45

Peter Kay: Cheese. Cake. Garlic. Bread. Leave big light on. T'Egypt.
John Bishop: Out out.
Red Dwarf: Dead Dave.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 10/10/2021 21:45

Pivot when moving
Love u2 great music etc (even though neither of us actually do)
I've got the key... other person to say I've got the secret
I'm hungry..hi hungry I'm mum/dad
Pass the matthew Robinson (from the mr gum audio books)

BunnyBerries · 10/10/2021 21:45

I do believe Bluey is gradually influencing the food replacements for any swearing

"Ahhhh cheese and crackers!"
"Oh biscuits!"

And

"ahhhhh go on, you will" a la Mrs Doyle if someone refuses food or drink you offer Grin

Yddraigoldragon · 10/10/2021 21:45

Eggs are eggses, any toddler fruit is yum yum baronies (kiri and Lou).
Stew is ‘beep’, it is made in the instant pot.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/10/2021 21:45

Pret A Manger (pronounced as in Away In A Manger) - I’m afraid to say, after some young Aussie guests ‘doing’ London told us they’d had a nice lunch there.

I didn’t have the heart to correct them.

0blio · 10/10/2021 21:45

🎶 'Black bin bags' a la Dave Spikey in Phoenix Nights
'Appol' as said by Maya Rudolph in Bridesmaids
And of course Peter Kay's 'gaaaalic bread?'

CaitoftheCantii · 10/10/2021 21:46

‘You’re Weclome’ from Still Game
‘Who’s upset Penelope’ from Morecambe and Wise, about anyone grownup who is having a tantrum
‘Give me that hammer’ said by me with narrowed eyes like Mummy Pig (Peppa Pig) whenever husband is being difficult
Loads from Hey Duggie - Well done squirrels, you’ve got your tidying the kitchen badge’. ‘Time for a daddy hug’ etc
‘Hmmm’ - villager from Minecraft - used when mulling something over…

HelloDoris · 10/10/2021 21:47

@overthethamesfromyou

Henry 8th is known as Henry Vill (rhymes with Will)
Omg in our house too.. after our daughter (6 at the time) asked who Henry Vill was when we were at Hampton Court.. she was reading the signs but not understanding Roman numerals 🤣
Yddraigoldragon · 10/10/2021 21:48

Ooh, and a ‘tactical wee’ from Bluey
