What do they use in marshmallow toasting kits for the fire?

DS11 has only asked for 1 thing for Christmas and that is a marshmallow toasting kit. They all seem to use a tin or something that you set fire to as the little fire and then overpriced marshmallows and sticks. I could definitely put one together a lot cheaper I just don't know what it is they use for the fire. Does anyone know? I've seen some similar things for sale but all say you shouldn't cook using the flame.

A tea light?

YoghurtWeaver · 10/10/2021 20:52

You can just do them over a tea light! One of the big tea lights is best, Wilko usually have them.

Look at naked marshmallow, they use the gel burners, so assume that's food safe, they are pretty pricey but you can get the burners on amazon for not alot.

But yes, a tealight is much cheaper!

Yes, chafing gel tins. Read the small print to make sure it's food safe. Loads on Amazon.

Its chafing gel fuel.

Reallybadidea · 10/10/2021 20:57

It's chafing fuel. We have a bunch of these for toasting marshmallows www.nisbets.co.uk/chafing-gel-fuel-200g-pack-quantity-12/ce241 (And then the buggers all went vegetarian so we never use them Sad)

Get him a basic fondue kit.
That way he can do marshmallow toasting and yummy choc fondues as a bonus

They use the tins of chafing fuel I believe which is usually used in catering to keep food warm.

PaperMonster · 10/10/2021 21:38

As others suggest, tea lights do the job perfectly well!

Not all marshmallows are the same. Haribos toast nicely but some of the pound shop varieties don't. Chamallows from Haribo are specially for toasting and Sainsburys also have them for a bit of skewer action - wooden not metal, unless it has a handle
