Helix Piercing

The past few months I've been considering a helix piercing.

The problem is I'm very scared it is going to hurt. I've had lobe piercings done when younger and the pain didn't bother me at all. Just the thought of the needle going through the tougher cartilage makes me shudder.

Those who've had it done how was it? Is it more painful than lobe piercing

Am I the only one who never heard the crunch of cartilage while getting pierced? I actually thought she'd really have to work to push it through it but it just took a second. I'm wanting a ring in mine eventually, she said she can put it in for me if need be.

I have an industrial, it didn't hurt especially when going in but it was a good 6 months before I could sleep properly on that side.
I've also got long hair which does sometimes catch around it, but nothing bothersome. It was a pain when it was done though as I'd catch it with the hairbrush on a regular basis 😂

@Mol1628 I don't really fancy either of those. It's specifically lobe and helix piercings that I like

How easy are they to change once they've healed? I hate sleeping with my earrings in. I know I'll have to for quite a while but afterwards are the helix ones easy to take in and out and change to fifteenth earrings etc?

Easy! Just need to be able to get a grip on the ball bearing that is on the bars to screw or unscrew them which can be fiddly, or locating the click in bit on a ring but it's fine.

You shouldn't get anything pierced with a ring, as they spin round and so slow healing down, and also if there is any small amount of infection, it can turn and pull the infection deeper into the ear. So it's bars only until fully healed. Which is around 6 months before you should consider changing it!

I had it done 2 weeks ago! Wasn't too bad at the time. Sharp sting and then sore after but nothing I couldn't handle. It was quite sore foot the 1st week but now I can sleep on it without pain. Glad I had it done Smile

Thanks for all the advice

Not a helix piercing but I do have scaffolding and they used a freeze spray before piercing.
This was about 10 years ago so perhaps they are discouraged now, but I didn't feel a thing other than thinking "Fuck that's cold".

Did the piercer not advise you not sleep on it?

You can (I often do!) but it does change the angle of your hoop and give you an ear dent!

Polmuggle · 02/11/2021 13:58

Just realised I've assumed you have a hoop - perhaps not!

Mol1628 · 02/11/2021 14:01

Try not to sleep on it even though it doesn’t hurt. You’ll end up with the dreaded bump!

Great you had it done though what jewellery did you pick?

FlipFlopFlossy · 02/11/2021 14:18

Not a hoop no, it's a bar. I try to sleep on my other side but when I need to move to the other side I can now without pain

OP posts:
FlipFlopFlossy · 02/11/2021 14:20

What is the bump @Mol1628? at the back or on the top of the ear?

OP posts:
Mol1628 · 02/11/2021 14:29

Just around the piercing hole itself front or back. They’re very common and harmless apart from looking ugly but they’re just a pain to get rid of.

FlipFlopFlossy · 02/11/2021 14:31

Thanks @Mol1628

I had a flat piercing (similar to a helix but in a bit in the flat part of the top of your ear) about three weeks ago and although it felt fine after a week or so, I slept on it funny last week and it's been sore and red ever since. So just a warning to be careful even though it feels ok! I've been being extra careful and its settling down but I am now using a travel pillow to sleep if I need to go on that side, so my ear is 'in the hole' of the pillow and that seems to help.

Same thing happens with my scaffolding 10 years later
