Ryanair or Jet 2

BlueStargazer · 10/10/2021 19:38

Ryanair looks hundreds cheaper for flights to Spain next year and seems to be rated better in recent airline rankings. But I remember Ryanair as being really bargain basement and am tempted to pay extra for Jet 2. Ryanair costs don't include any baggage allowance at all. Does anyone have any recent experience? Thanks in advance.

Meh I just go with the cheapest tbh

I fly Ryanair’s a lot. Back and forth to Dublin - I don’t even really need luggage checked in .. if you do then book it at time of booking. Not later

Haven’t ever really had a massive problem really

AFuturisticalSound · 10/10/2021 19:44

How much is the price difference once you've costed in the luggage?

What are the flight times like? Are they both from the same airport?

Too many unknowns to answer

FrozenoutofCostco · 10/10/2021 19:46

I used to work for Jet2 - ten millions times better for passengers in every area. Much more passenger focused.

This is simply because Ryanair use Swissport ground handling. So the staff you deal with on the ground just wear the uniform but don't work for Ryanair. After your flight, they'll don the uniform of another airline to check their flight in etc. Similar concept for their cabin crew. This results in employees who don't genuinely care about their passengers.

However Jet2 are self-handling. All their staff are trained by them. Work for them & them only. They're utterly awful to work for I will confess but they're extremely customer focused

Oh and a little secret that you may or may not know - whatever your baggage allowance is, they allow up to .9 extra with no charge. When I was there it was 22kg allowance for the majority of flights but up to 22.9kg was permitted with no extra additional charge

Aposterhasnoname · 10/10/2021 19:52

I used to date a Ryanair pilot, and as a direct result of what he told me I wouldn’t travel with Ryanair if they paid me, (important disclaimer, these were customer service issues, not safety worries) Jet 2 all day and all night.

LakeShoreD · 10/10/2021 19:54

Presuming it’s same airports, similar flight times and you’ve accounted for different inclusions like luggage then I think it would be insane to pay more for Jet2. I don’t doubt that their staff are probably a bit nicer but it’s the same generic low cost economy bus experience where you’re unlikely to exchange more than a hello with the crew anyway.

Xfox · 10/10/2021 19:58

Meh. Both get you from A - B with mildly irritating music over the tannoy at the start/end of the flight. Go for whatever is cheaper with baggage included / times work best.

Xfox · 10/10/2021 20:03

Having said that I think Jet2 were one of the better ones with refunds when covid kicked off

CremeEggThief · 10/10/2021 20:06

Jet2 is a better experience by miles, in my opinion. I would only fly Ryanair if it's the only flight operating to somewhere I need to (or really want) go.

BlueStargazer · 10/10/2021 20:09

Think I'm leaning towards jet2 in light of most of the comments, esp those about the staff and that jet 2 are more customer focussed. I just imagine Ryanair might be a complete nightmare if Covid kicks off again. Both have same airport and similar flight times. I haven't been through and costed it with luggage as I think I'd have to go through the booking process almost? I'll probably do that and if it is literally hundreds do Ryanair, but if less than a couple of hundred (there are four of us), just pay the premium. Thanks all!

Jet 2 is definitely a better experience, however if we are taking a significant difference once all baggage etc is added, I'd go Ryanair. Only worry at the moment is Ryanair aren't great with regards to Covid cancellations, if the flight goes then you can't get a refund, Jet2 has a more flexible policy.

Thanks. These are my thought exactly.

Ryanair totally shafted us during Covid. Will never fly with them again

legosunqueen · 10/10/2021 20:37

It's always irritated me that Jet2 are budget but a lot more expensive than RyanAir, EasyJet etc - but their refund policy during the pandemic has changed my view of them, when my Majorca flights were cancelled in summer 2020 I was automatically refunded the same day. I'd never fly Ryanair unless there was no other option.

Deianira · 10/10/2021 20:40

I have had really positive experiences with Jet2 especially with them helping me with something that went wrong (my fault entirely) - would definitely recommend.

MadeForThis · 10/10/2021 20:41

Really hate Ryanair and avoid flying with them if possible. But I wouldn't pay more for jet2.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 10/10/2021 21:13

At the end of the day it’s easy to say you never will fly Ryanair’s again - but in reality when it costs so much less most of the time you end up doing it 😂 I said it myself loads of times and always come crawling back !! I mean I pooped back to my parents in Ireland last week for 25£ 🤷‍♀️

Stickyblue1987 · 10/10/2021 21:47

Have flown with Ryanair hundreds of times and never had an issue. Jet2 is nicer to fly with though. Ultimately I would chose the cheaper (unless the difference was only small) and the better flight times. Ryanair luggage is expensive, like £35 per case. You can go right up until you add in your details to check costs.

DerAlteMann · 10/10/2021 21:49

If the choice is Ryanair or any other, I'd go with the other one.

RampantIvy · 10/10/2021 21:57

I have flown with Jet2 several times and really rate them. They have been voted best budget airline in Europe.

thisplaceisweird · 10/10/2021 22:01

They're too similar to pay hundreds extra for. A tenner maybe.

I say that but I travel ryanair often and it's always just 'fine' but have had some nightmarish Jet2 journeys

GiantKitten · 10/10/2021 22:17

I tried Jet 2 and Ryanair once each; wasn’t thrilled with either, & Jet 2 is so expensive!
Always use EasyJet now and have no complaints.

EileenGC · 10/10/2021 22:24

If it's considerably cheaper, choose the cheaper option.

I fly a lot (50+ flights a year) and Ryanair have always been a decent airline in my opinion. Never had an issue with them, good service from their staff. I'm a British Airways Exec Club member and also on the SkyTeam and Star loyalty schemes, so it's not like I only fly low cost and can't appreciate good quality.

Ryanair has very clear rules and luggage policies that once read, leave nothing in doubt. Right now with Covid they have free rebooking up to 7 days before departure. Since the pandemic they have been one of the easiest airlines to travel with - boarding passes are issued when you check in online and verified at the gate. No need for extra queues at bag drop so they can re-check your docs and THEN validate your boarding pass (looking at you BA and the useless Verifly!).

Their onboard sales and announcements get a bit tiring but I find them punctual, their communication is very clear and you get what you pay for - a cheap bus-like ride on a crammed plane. Same experience as you get with easyJet, Jet2 or TUI.

I've received refunds and vouchers from them during the pandemic and they offered several options whenever flights were cancelled or times changed.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 10/10/2021 23:05

I don’t really know why the staff being nicer matters tbh 😂 it’s a short flight and you can just put headphones on and not listen to anything or engage with them 🤷‍♀️

This. Take snacks and something to watch or listen to and you'll be fine. Ryanair's app is great, they manage the COVID requirements well and they're very efficient.

People only think they're rubbish when they haven't read the documentation well enough and get caught out.
