4, 5 and 8 years old. Interested in planets, solar system, my 8 year old astrology and Harry Potter and anything with magic and a fantasy. Dinosaurs and ghosts lol. My kids love all that. We have done the natural history museum and they liked that but more on planets. It doesn’t have to be all free if some places are not too expensive as 3 kids can be pricey 😬 thank you

The Martitine Museum in Greenwich is also brilliant for kids and it’s right next to a lovely green park with amazing playground and brilliant views across the city.

There's also the Observatory in the Park, but that does cost money. But good for anyone interested in astronomy.

From Cutty Sark station you can get the DLR and if you're lucky enough to get the front seat you can 'drive' the train. (I've never managed it. Grin )

Go to the riverside walkway in front of the Tower and watch Tower Bridge going up and down - the Tower Bridge website tells you when it will happen.

And if they've never done it, and you can manage it, a ride on top of a bus or on the Tube.

Wonderlab at the science museum is incredible and not free but cheap. My 3 year old spent 4 hours there this afternoon and had to be pulled away!

Just got home after a week in London where I entertained the LO while DH worked. Here are my tips:

Try and take the Uber Boat / Thames Clipper for a great combination of public transport and sightseeing. You don’t get any commentary, but it’s a lot cheaper than doing a tour. It’s cheaper if you use contactless than buying a ticket - think it’s £7.30 per adult in the central zone which runs from Tower Bridge to Chelsea or something similar.

Do note that the boat is not included in the TFL daily travel cap. I think the cap is set at £7.40 per day, so that’s the maximum spend using contactless no matter how many trips you do. It generally works out much cheaper than a travelcard, but check the tfl site to double check. Once I realized, I would jump on a bus even for a just few stops to save the endless trudging.

+1 for the Science Museum. The really interactive stuff is in the basement, with a fun exhibit of home items with lots of buttons and lights to push. There’s also The Garden area for 3 - 6yo with water play, fun mirrors and lots of things to push and explore.

The Natural History Museum is right next door to the Science Museum, and it’s currently holding a HP Fantastic Beasts exhibit. It’s ticketed and not cheap, but may be worth checking out if you have HP-mad kids.

The Harry Potter Platform 9 3/4 is a good photo op if you’re in Kings Cross, but it’s not really worth trekking across town for IMO. Also beware the enormous HP gift shop next door if your kids are souvenir hunters!

The Thames Path is now really good, with lots of waterfront cafes and green areas. We walked along from Waterloo to Tower Bridge (about 40 mins), passing The Globe theatre, The Golden Hinde (maybe good if your kids are into pirates and adventures), The Clink jail, and some lovely open green space for running about.

Finally, the new Walkie Talkie tower near Monument has a free to visit Sky Garden on the 30-somethingth floor with amazing views. Book a few days in advance and hope for clear skies.

It doesn’t especially fit with their sciency/HP interests, but the south bank is always good for free/cheap stuff. They sometimes have free concerts in the royal festival hall foyer. Walk along to tate modern, also free, and sometimes has interactive stuff on for kids. If you’re up for a walk you can keep going on to tower bridge, taking you past the globe and the London dungeon, or you can get the clipper cheaply.

We’ve done a London day where we get the clipper out to the dome, lunch there (lots of chain restaurants that often have voucher deals), cable car over the Thames, DLR back (although last time I was up in London in the summer they’d barricaded off the front seats due to Covid - wtf?) to tower gateway then you’re back at Tower bridge.

Last time we went I was surprised how much the kids liked the V&A (having done the more obvious science and nat history previously) and next time I want to take them to the London transport museum.

A family-friendly fun fair!!

A Victorian funfair happening right here in the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, this August Bank Holiday. Roll up, roll up - this summer Vauxhall has quite the spectacle for the whole family.

Be awed by circus acts, entertained by performers, delighted by fish & chips, and spun around by vintage games galore. With buckets of fun to be had for the whole family – little kids and ‘big kids’ alike – and it’s free for all to attend.

RSVP for free tickets and you’ll be entered into a competition win a VIP tour of Vauxhall City Farm.
