Selling used car - possible without MOT?

Pingodingo · 10/10/2021 07:56

Kicking myself as should have sorted this out earlier in the year but the MOT on my old golf is due soon and I’m expecting it to be ££.

But the car is only worth about £600 and I’m looking to trade it in soon for another newer used car.

Am I better off trying to trade it in at a dealership with no MOT or paying the ££ to get it done, then sell it?

There’s no desperate need to trade it in but it’s 13 yrs old and likely to start costing me money sooner rather than later!

Any advice please?

It's an old car, needs £££ of work on it to pass an MOT and would then only sell for 600 max (which means trade in would probably offer a couple of hundred if they'd even want a 13 year old car worth a few hundred) then I'd scrap it. You can get a couple of hundred. It seems far easier.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/10/2021 08:07

I agree no point in MOT, either get parts exchange value as a trade in or scrap it.

TheQueef · 10/10/2021 08:16

Scrap value would likely be more than second hand with no mot.
Are you certain it will fail and on what?

Hadn’t thought about scrapping it. Seems wrong to do that when it’s currently working fine (but pretty useless without an MOT, I get that)

Suppose I’ll have to put it in for the test and see what they say. Someone knocked my wing mirror which broke the indicator light, so it’ll fail on that definitely. Not major but still a cost to fix. More worried about the emissions side as it’s an old diesel chugger!

We recently scrapped our Audi and we only got £85.

TheQueef · 10/10/2021 08:31

Second hand cars are getting good prices so if it's a light (one you could maybe swap yourself) it's likely worth mot ing and selling.

Check scrap prices though you may have the same in scrap value of you've the right cat.

Fallagain · 10/10/2021 08:33

There is a shortage of second hands cars at the moment so I would do some research first.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 10/10/2021 08:34

Technically you can sell a car with a very short MOT, or with no MOT, as long as you’re very clear on the advert/to the person you’re selling to. And obviously if it’s expired they can’t drive it away, they’d have to trailer it.

But look at it this way — if you put it through the MOT and sort the issues, you might get another few months/years out of it without having to shell out for a new one.

Old Golfs are like cockroaches, an oil change etc every year and they just keep going, even if they are a bit bashed around and not the latest thing!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 10/10/2021 08:42

Are you sure it's even worth that? I live in a soon to be Ulez zone and had to get rid of my diesel golf last week to avoid being charged £12 every time I drive it. It was 15 years old. I took it to we buy any car (with MOT) and ended up with £155!
The guy there said that they were being absolutely flooded with diesel cars at the moment as no one wants them any more. Sorry I know that doesn't answer your question re getting it fixed. I was telling a Client at work about this and she said she got more than that for scrapping hers (350) .. which I think would definitely be worth looking in to for you as negates the need for an MOT!

icedcoffees · 10/10/2021 08:47

I got £200 for scrapping my old car through a dealer - it may be worth seeing if you can trade it in and get the scrap value off the price of your next car.

Ricekake · 10/10/2021 08:49

You'll get hardly anything without an MOT, there's so much uncertainty about how much it will cost to get it through. I'd either try and get a part exchange price even if its low (although to be honest if its unlikely they will shift it then you might not get any offers). Or bite the bullet and get the MOT and try and sell privately. If you think its worth £600, you'd probably get around 100 max for scrapping so as long as it costs less than 500 you'll make more. You could also ask on Facebook etc if anyone local strips them for parts and see what they will offer.

Pingodingo · 10/10/2021 08:50

Thanks everyone. Will check scrap value I think, and see how the Mot goes next week. Bloody cars - are just a hassle!!

The indicator on the wing mirror isn't an mot fail. As long as the actual indicator lights are working the unnecessary extra one doesn't matter.

EffOrf · 10/10/2021 08:51

I would trade it in, much less bother, if you get an MOT and sell it you could get a complaining person who isn't happy with it and you might not hear the end of it.

EffOrf · 10/10/2021 08:52

Or scrap it, whichever is best

adoreyou · 10/10/2021 09:07

We put our car on eBay recently....only as I put the advert on I realised the MOT ran out at the end of the month.... I still put the advert on but stated the MOT would be done before being sold.
We had loads of people contact us wanting to buy it without the MOT!

Only once we sold it we found out why... so they could come round and point out all the MOT fails on it and get money off.

Thankfully we did get it MOT'd ourselves so could happily tell them to jog on.

So it's perfectly fine to sell without the MOT , just make sure you advertise the fact and be ready for piss takers!

TacoTues · 10/10/2021 09:14

Have you put it in We But Any Car?

We did ok out of our Golf on there. And no guilt like if we'd sold it to an individual as ours also needed work done.

YoghurtWeaver · 10/10/2021 09:19

I'd take it for an MOT then sell it, either with MOT if it passes, or with a list of what it needs to pass if it doesn't! Someone will buy it. I've bought bangers with no MOT before, because I'd seen the test sheet and knew it was work I could get done easily.

Ivy48 · 10/10/2021 09:22

Do not use we buy any car! Absolute rip off. Offered £300 for my car but I know on autotrader or even Facebook market I can get £1000-£1500 depending on the time of sale. I bought my car with only a months MOT left. People will buy it as there’s a real need for second hand cars right now. Or trade it in before the MOT runs out. Some places offer minimum £1000 regardless of age etc
