Do people still wear hats to weddings?

Partner’s daughter’s wedding is in 2 weeks. I’m mid 50s and I haven’t been to a wedding in about 20 years, so I’m out of touch with what people wear these days. Back in the 90s we all wore big hats (like Andi McDowell in 4 Weddings and a Funeral!).

So, are hats still a thing?

I think it Berry much depends on the tone of the wedding. Registrar's Office and a pub meal afterwards, probably not. Big wedding with formal Wedding Breakfast then I probably would Smile

Personally only worn a hat for military weddings

No-one wore a hat to our wedding and it was this year. My MIL wore a fascinator.

I would never go to a wedding without a fascinator and buttonhole

I wore a small hat on a hairband to a wedding recently. I wasn't totally convinced beforehand but got lots of compliments. I'd say about 1/3 of the women were wearing some kind of hat or fascinator. MOB & MOG both wore excellent hats.

A few wore hats to my wedding recently. Depends on the tone of the wedding as to how many hats there will be. Mine was at a pretty relaxed wedding venue and there were a few hats. Do you know what her mother and her partner’s mother are wearing? If they aren’t wearing hats, I probably wouldn’t, but if they are then wear one if you want.

Onlinedilema · 09/10/2021 17:50

Depends some do some dont. A Fascinators might be a better option as it's not as formal as a hat.

hellcatspangle · 09/10/2021 17:53

I wore a hatinator to the last wedding I went to, lots of other people wore them too.

Kite22 · 09/10/2021 17:59

Depends on the wedding.

Last wedding I went to (2 years ago) all the Aunts, and the Mums wore hats, yes. Younger ladies (ie bride and grooms friends and cousins) I'd say about 1/2 for some sort of fascinator , 1/4 wore a hat and 1/4 didn't wear anything on their head.

But, a pp said, it will depend on the wedding.

AuntieMarys · 09/10/2021 18:00

I would never wear a hat or a fascinator as I would look a dick. I hate " formal" clothes as I feel overdressed. However some people suit a hat.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/10/2021 18:00

Very few do

I always wear a big fuck off massive hat

Milkbottlelegs · 09/10/2021 18:00

I would take the lead based on what the mothers of the bride and groom are doing. I definitely wouldn’t wear a hat if they aren’t.

lachy · 09/10/2021 18:03

Yep! I've worn a hat or fascinator to every wedding I've been to in the last ten years

TBH I don't buy many new ones, I tend to borrow one - they are a lot of money for something you can't actually see!!

Xiaoxiong · 09/10/2021 18:07

I have a massive hot pink hat that I wear to every wedding I am ever invited to. It was the one my mum wore to my wedding and she gave it to me saying I would get more use out of it than she would, and she was right!

PanicBuyingSprouts · 09/10/2021 19:07

So Envy. I would love to wear hats like that but something about my proportions makes me look more like fungi than fabulous Grin

onelittlefrog · 09/10/2021 19:12

Yes some people do but it's definitely not compulsory. At a wedding I went to recently probably 20% of the guests were wearing hats or fascinators.

Camblewick · 09/10/2021 19:14

I do because I bloody love hats and never get the chance to wear fabulous hats unless it's a wedding.
