Sky Glass TV - anyone else thinking of getting one?

As we are currently mid-build (hence the username), we’re thinking of where the TV will go in the extension and want to wall mount it/hide some cables/etc.

Saw an ad for the new Sky Glass TV that looks perfect, bigger sizes than current TV, doesn’t need a Sky box (and can get rid of the satellite off the front of the house).
Can still have Sky multi room via a Puck (?) that would be good for the front room.

Thinking I’d choose white, although I assume the screen will still be black when switched off? But they are talking about adding artwork in the future. I quite like the idea the screen could be a picture instead of a blank space.

They are expensive but not hugely I don’t think, a long time since we bought our current tv so not looked at current prices.

Anyone else thinking of getting one?

FiL is thinking about it, so will wait and see, but unlikely. DH is still regretting changing from Sky + to Sky Q and thinks Sky Broadband is rubbish so will not be easily convinced.

I'd be interested depending on the price, and if you could get one in addition to already having Sky Q. If it's not compatible with that then unlikey as the alternative would be to upgrade all the teles in the house. We currently have 3 mini sky boxes dotted around the house.
Also, can it link to PS5 or Xbox. Without that, it's likey to be a no.
Might necok for households starting from scratch?

Thanks for your replies.

We never got round to changing to sky Q, was going to wait until we sorted the building. And only have one tv currently which I think we could continue to use with a Puck.

Found this page more useful than Sky itself:

We have Vodafone broadband, changed a while back as they are the first to allow access to CityFibre which is going live here soon.
So think our Internet will cope with it.

It is a better article!

What happens though if the sky box part of it goes off? With a normal set up the box can be changed or if the kids kick a ball at the tv and smash the screen but you can only afford a second hand tv at the minute so you couldn't watch Sky as you don't have a box.

Am I right in thinking you hire the tv from sky rather than own it (I was only half listening to dh when he was talking about Sky glass)?

LivingInABuildingSite · 09/10/2021 16:31

I don’t know about that StrangeAddiction.

There’s a reference to swapping the tv every 2 years, maybe it’s like a hire scheme? The sky website gives no details.

I think I read you can buy the TV outright or loan it from them, a bit like a phone contract. What puts me off is surely you'd need very good internet signal. Ours can be a little temperamental. I wouldn't like to rely on it if watching something live, or something I really wanted to watch.

LivingInABuildingSite · 09/10/2021 19:02

True about the Internet signal but I’m hoping I can hardwire it with an Ethernet cable - can run it through the wall so not visible. I wouldn’t want to rely on wifi signal from the router as it’ll be some distance from it.

I remember my grandparents only ever hired a tv, when anything went wrong with it, the company just came and replaced it. Maybe it’s a combo of that and a new mobile phone where you pay it off over a two year contract.

We are currently looking to switch away from Virgin and are also in the market for a new tv so seriously considering it.

Caspianberg · 09/10/2021 19:08

I wouldn’t.

If you want a nicer looking tv on the wall, try the Samsung ‘frame’ series

WayneBruce · 09/10/2021 19:33

Sky generally do Black Friday offers so probably worth waiting until then to purchase, just incase.

Clocktopus · 09/10/2021 19:46

I was looking at it as our Sky contract recently came up for renewal. The smallest of the TV (45") is £13 a month on top of whatever your Sky package is, the next one up (55" I think) is £17 extra, not sure how much the biggest one is. It comes with a two year warranty so if it broke during the contract I'd guess they'd repair or replace like they do with the sky boxes.
