Low fat, plain, gallbladder friendly recipe ideas?

GallbladderWoes · 09/10/2021 07:28

I currently have a gallbladder infection and the only things I fancy to eat are either baked potato or gluten free wrap with low fat spread.

The thought of anything oily, cheesy, spicy, creamy is making me feel nauseous and will obviously aggravate my gallbladder, but I'm drawing a complete blank on what to eat, except for maybe chicken?
I did manage a small portion of cottage pie last night.

I enjoy cooking, eat meat. Help!

I would have thought fish or chicken with veg and rice would be fairly safe, just simply seasoned, a few herbs and squeeze of lemon juice.

Absolutely yes, thank you.

Hopeful bump for some more ideas too 🤞🏻

How about broth-based soups like chicken noodle or scotch broth? Or a Buddha bowl - some cooked couscous/rice/quinoa topped with cooked chicken, salad vegetables and a bit of salad dressing? I think a roast chicken is going to be your friend here - just shred it off the bone and serve with a handful of new potatoes and whatever veg takes your fancy.

Roasting a chicken sounds like a good idea, I've eaten some chicken breast today and so far so good. Great idea re broth too thanks!

I'm currently in the same boat. Fat free everything, I'm living off beans on toast, salad, chicken and rice or potatoes. Porridge has been OK. And the odd egg. I have been eating jaffacakes when I need something sweet. Too scared to eat anything with fat in the pain is unbearable

Ricekrispie22 · 09/10/2021 16:51

Roast chickpeas with couscous. Make the couscous with a bit of vegetable stock to give it some flavour. You could add finely diced cucumber and tomato.

Cakey46 · 09/10/2021 16:57

When DH was waiting for gallbladder removal I would make him fake pizza made from tortilla, tomato paste, herbs, thin ham and low fat mozzarella. That seemed to satisfy his pizza craving as far as possible.

Cakey46 · 09/10/2021 17:12

Hi for really low fat recipes look at Rosemary Connolly, she manages to get flavour into low fat food. My fave is Gamon Rice with pineapple

Fallagain · 09/10/2021 17:15

Avoid cucumber

ballsdeep · 09/10/2021 17:17

I send to eat stir fry which had no oil and a tiny bit of seasoning. I ate it every day until I had my gall bladder out. I had infection after infection. Are you having it taken out?

No idea yet as this has been the first official infection although looking back I've had symptoms for ages!

@StarTastic it is horrific isn't it! Thought I was dying!

These are great suggestions thank you! Apart from the couscous and chickpeas, unfortunately neither agree with me 😞

@cakey46 funnily enough before this happened I was planning on making pizzas on wraps tonight! Right now I can't face cheese but will definitely be buying some low fat mozzarella and trying that when I can stomach it. My neighbour has some Rosemary Connelly books, I'll ask her!

Luckily I randomly went off sugar last year, no idea why but at least I'm not dealing with those cravings as well, it's hard enough being hungry but struggling to eat!

Oh and there's wine in the fridge but I just daren't risk it 😭

@Fallagain is that a trigger? Funnily enough in the past I've really struggled if I've eaten a lot of salad or vegetables but I put that down to IBS Confused

I ate soup/broth (non cream based soup obvs!), chicken and rice, green apples and dry toast when waiting for my operation. Luckily white wine seemed to have no effect on the attacks as it was a pretty miserable time Wink Good luck OP

It was for me and I’ve heard other people say the same.

GallbladderWoes · 09/10/2021 21:56

Thanks guys. How long did people have to wait for the operation? I'd have it tomorrow if I could!

Also doing the same. Immediately went on a low fat diet as the pain was so bad and don’t want to risk another attack. Having it removed this month.
What’s helped/been ok:

  • Udon noodles, some light soy sauce and tofu or cod fillets
  • wholemeal pasta with low fat cheese and tomatoes.
  • M&S Plant Kitchen veggie burgers (most stuff in the range is high fat though).
  • Fruit apart from apples
  • Wholemeal naps with turkey
  • Wholegrain rice with salmon (although this is a fatty fish so I wouldn’t eat too much)

I’ve cut out all caffeine, sweets etc. Haven’t been in pain since being in hospital but can definitely ‘feel’ the stone instead, if that makes sense?

SuperPug · 09/10/2021 22:03

I’ve had a six-eight week wait as the inflammation was severe and needs to come out.

SuperPug · 09/10/2021 22:05

Ah - forgot to add. Chicken Ramen at Wagamama’s is good and low fat. I’d aim for around 5g for each meal if you can, up to 8g or so, at the most. When you look at the fat content for most restaurant and takeaway food, it’s a bit of a shock, with some fast food places generally coming out worse than Pret or similar.

SuperPug · 09/10/2021 22:06

*better not worse. You can check nutritional value for most chains.

Marguerite2000 · 09/10/2021 22:09

Try the old Rosemary Conley recipes. She originally started her low fat diet for relief of gall bladder symptoms.

SoftSheen · 09/10/2021 22:17

Cod baked inside a foil parcel with herbs, cherry tomatoes, pepper and (if you like them) capers.

Grilled butterflied skinless chicken breast with herbs and lemon.

Pork fillet medallions with apple sauce

Pasta with sauce made from vegetables and lentils/chickpeas

Vegetable or chicken soups, made with minimal oil.

Porridge made with skimmed milk.

Fat free yoghurt

Baked apples

When DH had this he was also OK with the odd boiled egg, though they do contain some fat.

Rich tea biscuits, Jaffa cakes, scones with jam, plain jam Swiss roll are also all low in fat. I made DH a fat-free Swiss roll for his birthday cake, with no ill effects.

Hope you manage to get your surgery soon Flowers

GallbladderWoes · 11/10/2021 18:48

Thank you so much everyone.

I've been really careful to eat extremely low fat but still having mild pains. Nothing like before though thank goodness!

Yesterday I made a roast dinner with fry light, I didn't have any meat and instead made a stuffing type thing out of lentils which worked really well!

Shopping delivered today included lots of fresh soups, pasta, rice, low fat meat etc

It's a lot to get your head around, I've spent the last however many years being told fat is good and carbs are bad... So eating low fat with protein AND carbs is wild to me.

Tonight is a jacket potato, low fat spread, sprinkling of 50% less fat cheese, and tuna mixed with fat-free fromage fraîs. Oh and a salad with fat free dressing.

Neighbour has very kindly loaned me Rosemary Conley books and measuring cups until mine arrive.

Still awaiting a scan date but Dr said today that the blood tests didn't indicate that a stone is stuck so that's good.
