School run with 2.5 year old

I am looking for a school run solution for my 2.5 year old. It's a mile each way, along narrow pavement. Walking both ways, twice a day, is a bit too much for him.

More importantly, I need to give my older child some focused attention on the way to/from school.

Backcarrying in a sling would be ideal, but quite heavy for me. I was thinking maybe a lightweight ride on toy that I could push with one hand? Maybe a very small pram. The goal is to be very lightweight, easy to hop on and off, and can be operated with one hand.

Any suggestions?

Narrow buggy.
Scooter space is just as wide as a buggy if you are stood to the side.

One handle each with elder child?
Elder child pushes, you walk in road beside and jump onto pavement if car approaches?

Another vote for a buggy! We have a baby jogger really lightweight and easy to push. Toddler in buggy on way there and they walk back in the mornings while I push the empty buggy

I tied a dog lead around the handles of the scooter when DS was little. Gave me more control over it plus could pull it along with him standing on it when he got a bit tired.

I have the same distance. 2 year old (not quite 2.5) would love to scoot it (and is v good at scooting) but realistically would ditch the scooter half way or have a tantrum so we stick to scooter for shorter distances and for the 1 mile school run we use a pram.
Older child on a buggy board etc, or just standing alongside you as you push in front?

Don’t really understand the width issue tbh if you are standing alongside the older child as the width of the pram is in front of you both..?

We use a balance bike, with a scarf to loop over the handlebars as a tow rope if necessary for dawdling/hills/safety.

@adaptiveness

If I use a pushchair, older child will have to walk behind me, as there isn't room. Not sure if I can explain this right, but the pram takes up the whole of the pavement width. So if I'm pushing the pram, I need to stand in the middle of the pavement, and there is not room for older child to walk next to me.

I was thinking a push along scooter or something would take up less space, allowing me to walk on one side of the pavement. And so give room for the eldest to walk next to me and have a chat. Plus I'd have hold of the scooter, so no need to worry about losing the little one.

Not a resounding endorsement of push along scooters on this thread though. Maybe I'll go with a toddler carrier/sling instead. I'm pretty confident with back carries for toddlers.

Back carrier then yep. Then toddler can walk when sibling is in school. Or a scooter for older child in front of you pushing buggy? That's what we did quite a lot. Had quite an age gap though so older dc sensible about stopping for roads/driveways.
