I just popped a stye on my eye

I didn't really know what a stye was but I read on the NHS website that they eventually burst and go away on their own. I've had this little b*stard for three days. It was a red lump with a white lump on it under my upper lash line. It HURT and was so irritating.
The 'burst' bit was a rag to a bull, if they burst themselves they're popppable. So I've just performed the operation on myself.
1)Is a stye basically a spot on one's eye?? Why didn't I know this
2) obviously this is ill-advised. How likely am I to get a terrible infection/go blind/die?
The relief though!

Stye facts brought to you under the letter S in my Sporn File.

😁 Interesting info!

Sporn File Grin

I have had many sadly only one I have been able to pop. It was a joyous moment one I look back on fondly

@OhWhyNot I too have squeezed many spots, allied pustules and ingrown hairs over the years but some linger in the memory, don't they?

One of the best wasn't technically a stye in that it wasn't an infection, didn't hurt and went on for ages. Instead it rose and fell on my lower right eyelid like the tides. I could press it and get some gunk out when it was particularly large but it wouldn't go. I had to stop using pencil under my lower eyelashes on bad days because it took on a 3D aspect and I knew people were staring.

One night I'd had enough. It had been there for nearly a year. I went to the loo while DH and my mum were watching a film - Clint Eastwood's Thunderbolt and Lightfoot - and looked at it in the mirror and just knew...

I pinched with thumb and forefinger and after an instant of pain and resistance there was an audible pop and a solid plug of clear gunk came out followed by more liquidy clear jelly.

I went back into the living room and Clint and Jeff Bridges were still on and neither my DH or mum realised the near religious experience I'd had.

Sadly it was the days before camera phones but the scar on my eyelid remained for a while. I kept having a go at it like all true sporners but that well had run dry.

@limitedperiodonly i have 2 which linger Grin

First was when i was about 15. I was 'doing' my nose - getting the odd blackhead out - when i squeezed what i thought was a just little tiny whitehead. It produced a little tip and i got it between my nails and pulled, hoping for a satisfying little plug. WELL .... my lord it kept coming! I pulled a roughly 3 inch long (i swear!) 'string' of stuff out of this tiny hole right on the bridge of my nose! I'd had a tiny bump there for years and now it was gone Shock It left a little crater which i had to keep v clean for a day or two till it closed up. sigh.

The second was on my DHs back on our 2nd/3rd date. We were standing waiting for a cab and i was lazily stroking his back (like you do). I felt a little lump under his t shirt about half way up his back near his spine and asked him what it was and could i look .... he didn't have much choice, i whipped his t shirt up ...

OOH MY! A weird black head thing. (DH was/is a beautifully groomed handsome bloke i should add. he just didn't know this thing was there) God knows how long it had been there. I squeezed. He yelped. I shushed him and squeezed again. Readers - this lump of white rock hard stuff popped out leaving a bloody great hole which didn't even bleed and i swear to god it was the size of the pink bit of my little fingernail! Big oval ... thing! I flicked it away and told him it must have been a splinter. Didn't want to embarrass him :)

It never came back :(

@Laiste should be part of the vetting procedure for new partners
a) can they grow the odd , high class squeezable?
b) are they prepared to offer it up?

I thought you meant a mathematical compass and that you’d been stabbing the stye with one after warming it to sterilise it. Scarily I thought that sounded like a good plan! 😂

Autocorrect would have had a lot to answer for Grin

Those sporn stories are amazing!
