Any advice on ‘Grumbling Appendicitis’

Posting for ttaffic.DS(6) has been complaining of stomach pain on and off since last week. It seemed particularly worse this morning so kept him off school. He said it was in his right side and also hurts when he coughs and sneezes. No other symptoms. DH took him to urgent care where the doctor advised it’s most likely a ‘grumbling appendicitis’ and to continue as normal unless it gets really painful . DS is back home and pain free now so we’ve asked for an appointment with our GP to check if he can undergo more tests if possible?. I’m wondering if this could turn into a proper infection and if there’s anything we could to prevent this?He also had a bowel surgery as a baby so worried if it’s related? The pain wasn’t excruciating so I don’t know what to make of this. Any experiences greatly welcome to keep my mind at ease.

My DS had a 'grumbling appendix' about a year ago (he was 9) for a few weeks. At one point it was bad enough that they offered either to operate or for him to take antibiotics. He took the antibiotics and has been fine for the best part of a year now. But they did an ultrasound; our GP advised me to take him to A&E. I'd say if he gets any more pain, take him there. Appendix pain isn't something that should be messed around with.

My DS 2 aged 13 had tummy ache around his navel area, not excruciating, one episode of vomiting, temp fine, otherwise well. Gp referred him to paeds who were sceptical. Kept him in hospital overnight as his white cell count was elevated and sent him for an US next morning. US showed inflamed appendix which apparently was unusual to spot in boys. They gave us the option of surgery or wait and see. DS was happy to wait but I intervened and got him to change his mind. He went down to theatre later that day and the surgeon admitted that it probably wouldn't have got better on its own.
My son didn't have the typical symptoms but I just had a gut feeling. Don't think there's anything you can actually do apart from keeping a close eye on him. Main symptoms are increasing pain, usually it's central tummy area moving to the rt groin area, worse on release of pressure if you press it. Vomiting, diarrhoea, temperature, rigid abdomen. Hope you get it sorted soon, it's so awful worrying and watching.

@Sapphire387 glad your DS is fine now. I do intend to take him straight to A&E should the pain increase any time as it’s impossible to get a GP to see him.

@Thekolschisonme Looks like it was the right decision to get your DS operated. It’s quite frustrating that we were essentially asked to not come back until it gets bad enough for A&E , surely we don’t want to wait until it gets excruciatingly painful for poor DS.
