Please help me choose between cutlery!

Not the most exciting thing in the world, I know, but...

I need to buy a new set of cutlery, hopefully to last many years, and have narrowed it down to the following options in 18/10 stainless steel:

Arthur Price Georgian - www.hartsofstur.com/arthur-price-classic-old-english-georgian-58-piece-cutlery-box-set-zgeo5801.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwtfqKBhBoEiwAZuesiO_v1waI6TqdsXk-Nq1bP9dHphhCHCQGq_UqNdPFLULz_xL5R02OGhoCT0sQAvD_BwE

Arthur Price Willow - www.arthurprice.com/category/cutlery/arthur-price-cutlery/willow/everyday-classic-willow-42-piece-box-set

Viners Eden - www.amazon.co.uk/Viners-Eden-44-Piece-Cutlery-Set/dp/B0054O7HIU/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=44+piece+cutlery+18%2F10&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1633565734&sr=8-9

Please ignore the pricing and I’ve randomly linked from a variety of suppliers just for the pictures, so not necessarily buying from there.

Anyone have any opinions on which they would choose, if they had to?! I appreciate they won’t be everyone’s cup of tea Smile

Thank you so much!

I’d chose the first one.

HyacinthsHydrangeas · 07/10/2021 17:35

I like the Viners Eden best--the forks are lovely and I like the length of the cutting edge (not sure what it's really called!) on the knives. However, the shape of the spoons seems a bit odd, but it's hard to tell from the photos. I think the Willow has the most pleasant-looking spoons. But you can hardly go wrong with any of them!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/10/2021 17:37

Have you held them in your hands?

We bought a Viners set about 35 years ago and were really surprised when we held a few different styles. The weight and balance was so very different from set to set.

So much so that we are planning a fairly long trip so we can heft a few more, as ours has just started to show the base metal and a bit of rust through the handles of some.

I bought a 'posh' canteen a few years back but they rusted in no time (viners). I'm hosting Christmas this year so have invested in a new set so everything matches. £7 from B&M!

MerryMarigold · 07/10/2021 17:45

I hate the first one. The forks!

Second one is plain, simple and very nice.

Third one is more unusual but I'm not sure about eating a yoghurt with that teaspoon!

LIZS · 07/10/2021 17:55

Arthur Price used to have a better reputation for quality but suspect neither is Sheffield made now. If you look at the knife I think the AP one is traditional hollow handle two piece whereas the Viners one is moulded from one.

Erictheavocado · 07/10/2021 17:56

Have you looked at Denby cutlery? Whilst I haven't used it myself, if I was buying I'd definitely look there. I have bought a lot of their pans and bakeware over the last couple of years and the are top quality. Even better, I get triple value by using Tesco Clubcard vouchers.

LIZS · 07/10/2021 17:57

Meaning the first AP is hollow handle, second is probably similar to Viners one

TheDogsMother · 07/10/2021 17:59

Second one

Etinox · 07/10/2021 18:07

Definitely go somewhere you can hold them. TK Maxx always have vintners and arthur price.

Palavah · 07/10/2021 18:10

Have you held them in your hands?

This. Don't choose without holding them.

FinallyHere · 07/10/2021 18:29

Absolutely agree don't buy without holding them in your hand.

We got a range of samples and just loved the feel of https://www.robertwelch.com/#

They have a studio where you can see how they are made and try out different styles. Or have them send you a sample set.

Enjoy. These started as out 'best' set but we use them everyday now. A real pleasure.

EmmaStone · 07/10/2021 18:41

Another who thinks you need to actually hold them to try, but I prefer the second and third styles.

Having said that, I bought new cutlery during lockdown from my Waitrose delivery 😂. Worked surprisingly well having not had the chance to try them.

Time40 · 07/10/2021 18:56

For looks alone, I'd have the Georgian - but pps are right: you really, really need to hold it.

Alwayscheerful · 07/10/2021 18:58

Robert Welsh, nothing beats it .

Alwayscheerful · 07/10/2021 18:58

Welch !

MrsH201 · 07/10/2021 19:26

Thank you so much for all the opinions. They are really helpful in making a decision.

Yes, I totally agree with those who have suggested that it would better to see and try in person. It’s an absolute pain having to buy everything online. However, for complex health reasons that I’d rather not go into, I cannot go anywhere to try the cutlery. I’ve not been in an actual shop for years.

My current Viners set has lasted 14 years so far and I’m only replacing it due to the style having been discontinued, so I’m really hoping a new set of cutlery will hold up as well.

I don’t think any of the knives in the particular sets that I’ve mentioned are hollow, but Arthur Price do have a more expensive range that have hollow handles for better balance.

The Robert Welch cutlery looks beautiful but is a bit out of my league price wise.

Oh, how I wish I had Tesco clubcard points to spend at Denby. That sounds like a fun shopping trip... enjoy! Smile

look up solingen cutlery not cheap but the quality is fab , stylish and lasts forever my set is currently ten years old and still looks like new

hairymuffet · 07/10/2021 20:41

I have had that viners one for 20 years. Nice set, still looks good 👍

CorianderAndCream · 07/10/2021 20:42

Georgian!

Gindrinker43 · 07/10/2021 20:44

Have a look for vintage cutlery you can get some wonderful sets at auction and so much less expensive

DotBall · 07/10/2021 20:50

I like the Viners set, but all of them are nice, I like plain cutlery.

I’ve bought a set of pans from Harts of Stur years ago and their customer service and delivery were fab. Including the edible parcel filling which could be put out for the birds (made from corn).

Libertaire · 07/10/2021 21:00

Cutlery is such a tactile thing. I would always want to touch & feel the pieces in my hand before buying. Aesthetics would always come a distant second to feel. Just from looking at these options, I would choose the second one, but that may well change the moment I picked it up.

AnnaSW1 · 07/10/2021 21:04

I wouldn't but the first one because of the large shape of the end of the knives. I find it really annoying to use

wishingchair1 · 07/10/2021 21:31

Definitely feel them in person. Weight really matters, as people have said. If you can go to a tk maxx or homesense they have some fab deals.
