Raised liver enzymes 19 year old... talk me down

DS19 has had stomach pain for a year now... sometimes it's bad, sometimes it goes away. Stress definitely triggers it.
Last November, an ultrasound of his abdominal region came back totally normal. No bloods were taken.

He recently had bloods done by the gastro he's been seeing (in relation to his tummy pain) and his liver enzymes are raised. He's being booked in for an MRI.
He's not really a drinker is the thing (and I know people will assume that because he's 19, he is, but really, he doesn't drink at all). So I can't blame it on booze.
I am bricking myself. My brother died of pancreatic cancer, which was so traumatic. My default setting is to go into panic mode.
I am really scared. Any wisdom, lovely MNers, to reduce my anxiety?

Your anxiety is based on the past, not on current fact. There's soooo many things that can cause stomach pain and funny liver enzymes. Right now your anxiety is because of your brother, not your son. He's a different person with a different body.

Does he drink a lot of red bull?

TheVanguardSix · 07/10/2021 12:02

No he doesn't HS.

Yep. It's a bit of a 'needle in a haystack' type of scenario. And so many of those things could be benign... or terrible. It's all a bit vague. I am scared though.

Thats good as i know someone who got liver issues from too many.

Has he had covid?

foreverchangingmyname · 07/10/2021 12:08

Any chance it could be gallstones and/or pancreatitis?
I've had my gallbladder removed but still suffer with bouts of pancreatitis, can sometimes even be set off with painkillers, especially if I haven't ate much that day.

Always got results in my liver enzymes, amylase and lipase going haywire

Ask for his iron levels to be checked with blood test please.

My brother had odd liver readings and a range of health issues (20s, doesn’t drink). Turned out it’s hemochromatosis - also called iron overload. Basically the opposite of anaemia.

It’s really easily dealt with (just regular blood giving basically!). However one of the risks of it not being treated is, eventually, slightly increased chance of pancreatic cancer, which our dad died of. And it is genetic (recessive gene I think).

It could be any number of things but it’s a really easy one to rule out, and also really easy to treat.

TheVanguardSix · 07/10/2021 12:23

Random that's very interesting because my brother's pancreatic cancer was also genetic we were told.

I will have his iron levels checked. Thank you for this.

forever I too wonder if it's gallbladder-related. Though his pain is really low down in the caecum/appendix region.

Do you know which liver enzymes? I've had raised ALP all my life for no apparent reason.

AppleBlueberryPie · 07/10/2021 20:00

Does he take painkillers for the pain? Too much paracetamol can easily raise liver enzymes, or even a normal amount combined with supplements or alcohol. I had significantly raised liver enzymes in early pregnancy simply because I was taking vitamin b6 & phenargan against morning sickness (both within recommended doses).

It also sent me into a panic but I learned that liver enzymes can be caused by virtually anything and are also very good at getting back to normal. It could also be autoimmune related. A lot of gut disorders like Crohns, coeliac disease or ulcerative colitis typically start in the late teens or early 20s.

I have raised bilirubin levels and it doesn't cause me any real problems, but recognise not all instances are like that. I was just told to make sure no one worried if they were raised in the future.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 07/10/2021 21:33

Could be coeliacs too, my only symptoms were raised liver enzymes and anaemia. I would occasionally get stomach pain that took my breath away. Worse than any Labour pains with my kids.
