Midwife career change

Out of interest, is anyone on here a midwife that has changed careers, and if so what did you do? I'm reaching the end of my tether with it all but have never done a different job and really don't know where to start.

I'm not a MW, but work in healthcare. Have you always worked in the NHS? I've found working within the private sector can be a game changer! Is there anything else you'd like to try? Have you considered joining an agency, so you can try various hospitals and settings? I did this and gained so much experience in areas I had never considered before.

  • Clinical research is a medical area often overlooked as a career, unless you know someone working in it or are aware of it.
  • I go to an osteopathy school for the odd treatment and the majority of their students, have already had a career. Once qualified, you can set up your own practice, set your own hours or rent rooms in other clinics etc.
  • A friend is a MW and moved from regular hospital work into helping parents in the first few weeks at home. This role might have a specific name, but I don't know what it is. In Victorian times it was called a 'monthly nurse' because they usually stayed and helped for only a month.

Another one- CPR training. Child first aid or CPR for new parents and grandparents?

I’m in midwifery research and I love it

@Hairyfriend they’re called maternity nurses and you get paid a lot of money for it. Unfortunately not really viable if you have children and responsibilities as most require you to live in. Would be an excellent choice if no children etc though.

OP, You can do HV and school nursing courses as post graduate in uni for 18 months, and get paid your band 6 wage as you train which is very tempting.

There are regularly jobs on BPAS and Marie stopes if you think you’d be good in that field.

Family nurse partnership? Looking at it myself if they continue to push best start.

Thank you all! Definitely some food for thought. Even more keen to leave now, it's destroying me.

maternity nurses don't need to live in, they can do nights or days - night nurses round here are needed and it £200 a night for a fortnight

Been awake from 2:10 until now, just generally unable to shut my brain off. And we wonder why we're all burnt out in the NHS!

Similar here but a nurse.
I’m finished with it all.
I have a job in the private sector, counting down now to finishing.
It’s a relief.
I work with midwives who have left the nhs to the private sector. They would never look back.

I know a midwife who become a sonographer and totally loves it and the set 9-5 hours it brings
