I am at a crossroads as received some interesting news about my career earlier this week. Basically my current position is becoming obsolete very soon and I am needing to apply for a different one within my company, should I be unsuccessful they are still offering to retain me on the current pay rate for further 12 months with the full support and upskilling, should I need it. OK, I thought, I have 12 months... but still popped the green "looking for new opportunities " thingy on my LinkedIn.
Well, I have been invited to 2 interviews (new field, will have to upskill, but money is approximately 20/30% more then my job now).
However, just an hour ago I received an email from my previous boss (left pre pandemic) and they are offering my old job back to me. Money is the same as the jobs that I have to interview for, the job is interesting and I could do it with my eyes closed. The catch is, the job is very stressful, rewarding but you have to be always ON. Loads of legal responsibility and official paperwork. But high paced and the bonus is good 😆
I know it's late and the Mercury is in retrograde, but I feel that I need to decide whether I want to go back to old job, or forget it and crack on with interviews and try something new. I'm in my 40s, just in case you are wondering how old I am, and the positions are in middle/senior management.

Ooooh interesting.

I would go for the new opportunity I think. I’ve just applied for something brand new as I’m bored at my current job and tbh don’t even want a different role there - no idea if I’ll even get an interview but it has made me feel a bit more invigorated about work to know that I might have an interesting challenge.

I wouldn’t go for the one you could do standing on your head, you’ll get bored and annoyed at the stress. Ok you might not but I think I would!

Anxiety was the reason why I left that job. I just couldn't switch off, and wasn't fun to be around at home. I think after almost 3 years out of that stress I've forgotten how bad I felt.

Assuming the interviews are soon there’s nothing wrong with getting a feel for the new opportunities while you consider the offer in your hand

Some stress is good (it helps me with motivation) but a job that's stressy all day everyday, no thanks.

12 months ago I returned to a previous role. I hadn't forgotten why I left, but was convinced by my manager it would be different.

Well my manager left 4 weeks after I returned and the old role reverted back to how it was (boring) and I was stuck there.

Have left again now and just started a new role in a different area.

Remember why you left in the first place.

I'd interview at completely new job, or take up your current employers offer to re-train.

I'll clarify the fine print tomorrow, but I have a feeling that I might not have loads of time to ponder the offer. Hence the conundrum.

Thank you, that's why I've posted. I need opinions! Having a job uncertainty is so stressful, but I don't want to make a mistake and just settle.I want to make a right long term decision.

I would go for the new opportunity! I always feel that you shouldn't really go back to previous jobs - you left for a reason!!

Are you being interviewed by a recruiter or in house team? Possibly they are just fishing for another person on their books, just be careful, recruiters are like estate agents, not to be trusted.

thecatmother · 07/10/2021 06:26

One of the positions is in house recruitment team, we've exchanged a number of emails. The other one , potentially a recruiter.

Thank you, the middle aged woman that I am is seeking comfort in knowing that I don't have to stress about money and job security, and the mid life crisis woman in me is suddenly feels excited by the potential new opportunities 😄. If I do go to my old job , I think I will only be able to do it on reduced schedule, as I do not want the pressure 24/7.

And just be aware - being tapped on the shoulder on LinkedIn does not mean you have the job in the bag - you might have the skills and you might have the personal qualities but if you are half arsed about preparing for an interview you probably shouldn’t bother - it comes across and you are wasting everyone’s time including your own. Good luck!
thecatmother · 07/10/2021 09:30

Stern, but I can take it! I'm feeling energetic about it rather then half arsed 😆
