If you had £5000 for a trip of a lifetime

Where would you go? Or more specifically, can you recommend somewhere for our family of 3 (LO will be 4). We married between lockdowns with no guests and definitely no honeymoon. It may still be premature thanks to covid chaos, but with winter looming I'm looking for escapes.

So can anyone suggest places? Thinking January/February, absolutely max £5000. We're quite active and enjoy swimming/diving etc, and have been lucky enough to live and work in Asia/Pacific so more interested in Atlantic/Indian Ocean/Caribbean. Please, help me dream!

Barbados. Love it there 🥰

spinachandchickpea · 07/10/2021 06:43

And you can do Barbados on that budget. Just stick to aparthotel or cheaper all inclusive.

@lastqueenofscotland

Don’t want to piss on your chips but £5k for 3 people isn’t really trip of a lifetime money… Cuba, proper Cuba, Havana, Trinidad, vinales, not the fucking awful resorts is amazing but not sure how far £5k would get you
Agree, much of your budget to longhaul destinations will be spent on flights.

I always dream of an igloo under the northern lights
Silkieschickens · 07/10/2021 08:04

I also love Lapland but think its better for 5 plus as its so cold but the Christmas trips are really magical.

Polkadots2021 · 07/10/2021 08:04

To add I don't think it'd feel like a dream hols right now if you spend most of that on long haul, God knows how many hours stuck at Heathrow trying to get our/in, plus COVID, that's why I like stuff like the northern lights, seems magical, not too far away, wouldn't be billions of people, the joy is in the nature not how good the hotel ends up being, etc...

Safari with your dc

Innovationstandard · 07/10/2021 17:09

What's Covid like in lots of these places like atm though?

Gotthetshirt23 · 07/10/2021 17:15

New Zealand 🇳🇿 if they open the boarders .
Massively outdoors - ski scuba hike
Amazing place !

Mexico. Specifically Riviera Maya area.

There’s lots of family friendly water parks and trips. Playa del Carmen is nice for a mooch, though we probably spent far too much time in a giant Walmart there buying American snacks.

Yes, xcaret Occidental is a great hotel there. Can really recommend. Loads to see and do rather than just stay in resort.

Barbados is fab.

buttermutt · 07/10/2021 17:38

French Polynesia is top of my list, although it’s a bloody long way and not sure what £5k would get you. But fun to google/dream!

It's beautiful but costs us a lot more years ago

I did a few holidays to the Caribbean when my DC had just started school. We did twin Centre holidays and stayed in a nice resort with lots of activities and a fab beach for part of the trip and then either before or after stayed in accommodation that wasn’t a resort such as a town house in St Lucia in a little town or a small hotel in Havana. We then ate at all the local places and was out and about a lot during the day. These holidays were perfect, my youngest had his fifth birthday on one of our trips.

MalagaNights · 07/10/2021 18:28

Disney world Florida.
With a 4 yr old it's magical.

You could stay in animal kingdom lodge and see animals from your room.
The animal kingdom park is lovely.

My Dh really didn't want to go, but we went when the kids were 4 and 5 & have the loveliest memories.
( We did end up going back...)

MalagaNights · 07/10/2021 18:29

But if the states aren't open, that's not much use... sorry 😬

SecretWitch · 07/10/2021 18:32

I would go to the Maldives. My time there was like being inside a dream. The water is spectacular as are the sunsets.

CoronaPeroni · 07/10/2021 19:42

It's got to be Florida with a 4 year old. Plenty for adults in the parks and beaches if you do a two centre.

DogDaysNeverEnd · 08/10/2021 11:26

Lots of good advice, thank you. Focusing on something LO would enjoy seems key. DH was talking about Iceland later next year, but I think LO would be bored silly and then we have to deal with that. Seems pointless travelling anywhere where we need endless paw patrol downloaded for entertainment.

I'm going to look up Barbados, and Florida, though I'm assuming Disney would be a lot more than our budget. Costa Rica is firmly on the list in another few years time.

Disney Paris.

We did safari in SA when DD2 who loves animals was nearly 8. I think any younger would be too young (there was a 6yo in our jeep a couple of days who was tired and bored and a pain). Early starts, late finishes, heat. It was fabulous.
