And would you recommend it. I’ve seen a few deals with Jet2 for 3 days with a trip to see the Northern Lights included. We’re you ok with the weather (just how cold was it). I’m tempted but not sure whether to go for it. Would be either next month or late Jan/early Feb.

I have. Went in November. It was fab, but be aware that the wind chill is savage and pack accordingly! Also the days are shorter - I'd say it wasn't fully light until after 10am. I did see the NL though so all worth it.

It was cold but not ridiculously so, it was more the wind which made it chilly. I wore tights and leggings under my jeans!

I went in February years ago. I think it was about -8 in the day but somehow it didn't feel that bad. We had beautiful sunny skies the whole time which helped. Never saw the Northern Lights though, despite then being amazing the week before 😭

It sounds great. Apart from the windchill that is. Thank you.

We went in October (so prob autumn rather than winter) and it was 3 degrees warmer than the Manchester we left! I took a really warm coat and ended up carrying it most of the time.

Oh wow. That’s the thing. The weather is pretty inconsistent just about everywhere. But perhaps November would be a safer bet then February in terms of coldness

I used to live in Reykjavik and it is extremely cold in winter. You need proper heavy duty snow gear. We moved in February and the day after we arrived we had about half a meter of snow fall, the heaviest since the 70s apparently. Its gorgeous in winter though, beautifully lit all through the city with lovely winter markets and events. I loved living there but my god is it cold. If anyone in your party has mobility issues as well then be aware that there will definitely be snow and that after a while the snow will compact into ice. I had a pushchair to get around when we first moved and it was a nightmare. Definitely go to a thermal outdoor pool while you're there, it's magical being in thr warm water while snow falls around you.

We went in feb and it was fab. it was cold but a good coat, hat and gloves made it fine. it wasn't unreasonably cold.

I'd avoid the whale watching tours though...i've never felt so sick in my life (and i have a pretty strong stomach)

ByGrabtharsHammer. Thanks for that. I hate walking on icy surfaces so it doesn’t sound ideal. All I can think of is potentially broken wrists and ankles as I slip about. I love your username btw - Galaxy Quest fan by any chance 😀.

We went to Iceland in November 2018 and the first two days were in Rejkjavik. We didn’t find it particularly cold there and weren’t wearing gloves or hats. It was bloody freezing in the golden circle and on the glacier when we went on the snow buggy though 🥶 🥶 Most wonderful trip of my life. There’s also a great natural thermal spa called
Hrunalaug In the Golden Circle. It’s located on a farm and it fits two people. Never thought I’d be stripping off to my bikini in Iceland and then sitting in bubbling hot water!

Keiki · 06/10/2021 14:10

Went in February a few years ago. Twas blasted freezing. Spent basically the entire time in thermal undies, normal clothes and ski gear over the top. And even that wasn't enough to keep me warm on the northern lights trip. I never, ever want another cold holiday.

Keiki · 06/10/2021 14:12

Just to add - I'm normally still in shorts and flip flops in December in the UK so I'm not usually a cold person! Amazing sights and scenery though.

We went in the half term, so more like end of October. The weather was horrendous - windy and rainy. Two out of our three trips were cancelled, including whale watching, because of the wind. Flights to America were diverted to Iceland and our hotel was packed with school children. Not the best experience I've ever had. I appreciate we were probably just unlucky though.

Thank you everyone. I think we won’t book it. We don’t have the right outerwear by the sounds of it and I can’t really afford to be getting new heavy duty coats, thermals etc on top of the price of the trip.
