Hi . I'm having alot of dental treatment done. Yesterday I had all my lower teeth removed. I'm having implants later. But for now I have temporary dentures but they keep moving. I have put on an adhesive its ok for about 10 mins then they loosen again. I'm using fixodent at the moment Sad

@marchez

Are you using enough fixer? Are you putting it in the right places so it contacts your gums?

Do you mean the temp dentures are on the lower jaw, as you shouldnt be using fixer on there if there are open wounds.

When I had dental treatment, the few days after I was only able to eat very soft stuff until the gums healed properly

The denture is on the lower jaw. The dentist said I can use adhesive. He fitted them with adhesive before I left as well. Apparently it helps protect the gum and with healing. I googled as well and it said the same.

And yes I have tried different amount incase and all over the gum Part of the denture.

The denture is moving when ever my mouth moves when I talk etc that's before I even try to eat .

Contact your dentist, you should be able to eat soft food without it moving
Don't drink hot drinks and rinse with luke warm salt water

I would say give it a little more time. I have a partial denture on my top teeth (years of problems) and I still don't like it after three years. I use it when I go out but otherwise I manage without. If it is for all your bottom teeth - persevere. You are lucky it's not for long. I wish this were me :(

Ah I have had a part denture for a long time I'm fine with it . Although I have taken them out for now so my mouth is not coping with to much. And your probably right about giving it more time it was only yesterday.

If you wanted to have something more long term have you thought about seeing if you can do it on credit. I know most dentist has a credit company they work with. Or you could do a pay at you go type thing. Or my dentist told me if I find that I can't afford it he can adapt my temporary dentures and have them screwed into my jaw . They don't last like proper implants though. Last about 3 years he said.

You maybe just need to try different fixative. I had a temp denture for a front upper tooth and found the non minty fixadent the best for keeping in place.

CarrotSticks23 · 06/10/2021 18:10

You've had a lot of teeth out. You will be swollen, it is going to move and its not going to fit 100%. If its temporary its essentially made as a best guess as to what your mouth will look like post extractions

A lower denture is often held in place mostly by muscular forces, your lips, cheeks and tongue. There's nothing there to hold it in place apart from you. It takes a good few weeks to learn how to wear it. Give it some time OP, wait for the swelling to go down an everything to settle. It might need some adjustment at your dentist but there's no point doing that at this stage when your so recently post extraction

TreaslakeandBack · 06/10/2021 18:12

Totally normal.
All dentures have some movement and lower full will have a lot. Immediates never fit that well.
Just think it’s a temporary measure and put up with it. Implants will sort it.
It isn’t your dentist’s fault - nature determines that after you have lost your teeth you should be edentulous and eat a soft diet. If modern dentistry through dentures/ implants sorts you out that’s amazing!

user6598 · 06/10/2021 18:24

Bottom dentures are much more difficult to get used to than top ones, I have both and had new partial ones about a month ago, I still sometimes have difficulty with it, it's like breaking in a pair of boots, I eat a lot of soft food while getting used to it and nothing bitty or hard, top one I barely know is there and was fine quite quickly. It will take a few weeks to get used to it and you may not feel like eating much out of the home, take time to practice eating when you are alone so you don't feel self conscious

RedBonnet · 06/10/2021 18:35

Hi Ima, I was wondering how you got on yesterday xx

Can't help with your dentures though sorry, I have partials and mine are OK with glue.

ButterflyAway · 06/10/2021 18:39

@RedBonnet sorry to derail, but do you have upper or lower partials? Even covering mine in fixodent (overspill was excessively gross), I can’t get them to blooming stay still. I’m on a mainly liquid diet because of them but dentist is chock a block for appointments up til the start of December!

ButterflyAway · 06/10/2021 18:39

*even covering my upper partial - that should have said, sorry

erictries · 06/10/2021 18:45

Try Secure or Wernit's powder instead of the usual fixadent/polygrip.
Or after a week or two go back to your dentist and see if they can put in a chairside temporary lining which might help

Omg I had at least 8 injections all the teeth came out so easy though. I had just one stich in the gum. I have no pain at all. If I touch one side of my lower jaw it feels slightly bruised. And that's it.

I'm very aware of my speech though so I don't like talking. I'm kind of practicing on the kids 😅. Once they stop looking at me like I'm odd I know I'm on the right track. They have also made my jaw look square I'm not happy with that at all.

It's going to be temporary for quite a while though so I need to be able to function reasonably. I'm hoping they will settle as others have said maybe I just need to give it a bit of time .

And no definitely not the dentist fault. And yes there seems to be quite a lot of choices now.

I just had one tooth out today and I can't imagine wearing a denture on top of the wound. I'm fucking miserable as I am so kudos to you!

It does not feel like a wound can't even feel its there. And to be honest having the denture there stops me poking at it Grin

Are you at all overweight OP?
Could you take this as an opportunity to diet?

20viona · 07/10/2021 07:53

Bottom dentures are notoriously difficult to stay in place without being implant retained and having only had extractions yesterday the gums need time to settle down then the denture can be relined. It can take months for the gums
To remodel unfortunately.

I have had dentures immediately over extractions and have found it much better than not, it doesn't hurt at all and stops the need to find it with your tongue.

I have been told by my dentist it can take 3-6 months for the gums to settle and shrink back properly while intermediate dentures are worn.

I have been told that I need to wear dentures till at least January. But I have also heard of people having implants put in the same day their teeth are removed.

My daughter is going to have 16 loose teeth taken out and was given the option to allow them to heal (3 months) before having dentures made. The other option was to have them fitted after extractions but risking a couple more teeth being loosened when taking the moulds. She has opted for them healing first as she doesn’t want to risk developing abscesses if she had them in straight away. He said the amount of dental glue would need to be got used to. It’s terrible for her as she needs to communicate in her job as she is a manager of a care home.
