Someone knocked on my door for iPhone charger…

Hi

Someone knocked on my door around 7pm and simply asked ‘have you got an iPhone charger’. I said no and shut the door but now I’m feeling freaked out.

I haven’t seen him before. He was young (looked 18/19) and had air pods in.

I thought it was my mum as she was coming round the same time he knocked.

Should I be feeling as freaked out as I am? Seems a bit odd to ask a random house for an iPhone charger..

I wouldn't even worry about it too much, just make sure the house is secure and looks occupied. Opportunistic thieves operate all the time, but the fact he knocked on your door yesterday and you were in and assertive makes it less likely that it will happen to you not more likely. Forget all the stuff people say about it making you feel so vulnerable and what if you were attacked etc - the bottom line is these little scrotes by and large just want easy money for drugs with minimal risk, they are not interested in attacking unless threatened. I speak as someone who has had two incidents - one time a guy walked in the open back door and was interrupted by my husband, the other they broke a window while we were out and searched every container in the whole house very neatly, including bead boxes etc on the children's beds (and only took my engagement ring). It did make us very nervous for a long time, but I have made my peace with the fact it could happen again (if they really want to break in we can't stop them) but we survived, its only stuff and they were probably more scared than us. I would recommend everyone has bolts and locks on garden gates, locks french doors and back doors when not in the room, has a WiFi alarm (cheap and gives peace of mind covering the downstairs while we sleep or are away). And expect your insurance to cover bugger all.

@JizzyJane I used to smoke - don't do that.

I don't know any smoker who would approach a stranger's front door whilst still smoking - it meant to me he was not expecting an answer.

Thanks I’ll try not to worry about it too much! And maybe he did genuinely want a charger but when I opened the door he was hidden and didn’t make his presence known until I saw him! Also when I said no instead of going straight away, he appeared to just look straight through my house… I will be more vigilant

@NumberNineTwo

An iPhone charger costs at least £25. Most people have a spare lying around from an old phone. If he can get hold of them he can sell them second hand. He was probably just trying his luck to get something he can flog.
I think that's highly unlikely. All the old branded chargers I've had get knackered pretty quickly and have been replaced with generic ones that are considerably cheaper. I can't imagine there's any market for used iphone chargers. Also knocking on random strangers to ask if they have one is a very odd way of getting hold of them.

It sounds like someone trying to see if people are at home, with a weak excuse if they are.

My current charger is a cheap multi cable, super fast one that cost a few pounds on Amazon and is better than any branded original charger that I've ever had. Most young people would know this. I don't think he was planning to steal a charger from the op. He was after more than that.Grin

Are you on Next Door? Maybe ask if anyone else has experienced similar?

Could be perfectly innocent and genuine or could be someone sizing up potential break ins.
