Child high heart rate

My 11yo has been out doing athletics - goes twice a week. Tonight said he felt like he couldn't breathe during the session, almost an hour after finishing his heart rate is consistently between 115-120.

At what point should I be concerned?

His sats dipped to the 80s at one point, but now 95-98. Temp is 37.5 so he's had calpol.

Based on no medical knowledge of my own, I think there’s some things worth phoning 111 for - and hearts, lungs or brains definitely come under the category of needing proper advice.

Heart rate of 115 is a little high but not terribly at 11. Do you have a proper sats monitor and why? (Ie does he have an underlying condition?) assuming a reliable trace his oxygen levels should definitely not be dropping to the 80s and if they were I’d be seeking medical attention. I hope all is well.

Thanks - we have a sats monitor because of covid and 2 CEV people in the house - not him though!

He's now asleep and his heart rate is 110-115. Sats occasionally dipping but that might be an issue with the machine & his slightly smaller fingers.

I'll keep an eye on him for a bit then may ring 111 if he's still the same.

The slightly high heart rate is very likely down to his slight temperature. Sats should stay in the 90s but always difficulty to tell if it’s machine error. I hope he stays well op and has a settled night, definitely worth seeking advice from 111 if concerned at all.

Just to update, I phoned 111 & the GP I spoke to suggested he was checked out by our GP. They've arranged an ECG & blood test just to make sure there's nothing underlying this. Hopefully all just to be on the safe side.

I would ask speak to the athletics club to make sure they’re actually training properly as well eg in terms of breathing techniques!

He's been going there for years & this is the first time it's happened, but I'll mention it to the coach next week so they can keep an eye on him.

Just for reassurance a Normal heart rate for age 5-12 is between 80-120

But you know your child and if you're worried call 111
