Toddlers first proper bug

19 month DS started with a sickness bug past Wednesday and is nowhere near better. He has moments of being happy enough but he's struggling to keep anything down at all (even water at times) and is essentially feeling very sorry for himself.

He's been screaming inconsolably none stop for the last hour or 2 and nothing will calm him down.

At what point is a sickness bug worth being checked out at the doctors?

Sorry, can't see the wood from the trees after the past few days.

I would see a dr today, that's a long time if he's been sick since Wednesday. Most bugs last 24/48 hours. Is he having wet nappies?

stressingmum · 04/10/2021 06:40

My 21 month old had exactly the same thing last month, his diarrhoea went on for 2 weeks on about day 10 I phoned the doctors and they offered too do a stool sample but did stress it could take 2 weeks too clear so I just waited.

Obviously if your child is vomiting that is slightly different have you tried the rehydration solution?

It does say on NHS website to get help if the vomiting has been more than 2 days.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/norovirus/

Hope they feel better soon!

He is but barely, if that makes sense? I only changed it yesterday out of habit, rather than a need to.

He's visibly lost weight too which I know is normal enough but still worrying

If it’s gone on for this long then I would have them seen. Have you been rehydrating correctly including electrolytes via frozen pops etc. If not the electrolytes can be out of whack as well if they have had diarrhoea and/or vomiting for 6 days now.

I've tried him with the rehydration sachets and he wasn't having any of it so have resorted to ice pops in the hope that at least he's getting some sugars and what not into him.

DD has never been a sicky child and any time she's had a bug it was a standard 24 hour job so this lasting so long for DS is a complete unknown for me. Hence the starting to worry but not knowing if its normal.

You can get rehydration sticks you freeze as ice pops which most like sucking on.

He’s still very little, it’s been going on a while and he sounds very dehydrated. I think it’s entirely reasonable to phone your GP.

Artdecolover · 04/10/2021 08:57

Sadly 1st gastro bugs are lile this :(

Both my dc had an awful time with their first...1 week of vomiting 2 weeks of diahorrea

Just keep giving clear fluids and a probiotic if you have any

Also bear on mind lots of kids have temporary lactose intolerance after a bug

HunterAngel · 04/10/2021 09:34

Usually 48 hours is enough to clear the bug from his system. Keep trying with the rehydration sachets, once made up they keep for 24 hours in the fridge so try and get him to take a few sips every now and then rather then all at once. You can get different flavours, if the blackcurrant isn’t to his liking try asking the pharmacy for a different flavour like citrus or plain.

Try to avoid dairy, stick to a very basic, plain diet. Dairy can upset the stomach after a period of illness. Try breadsticks, crackers, plain toast, pasta no sauce etc. Little and often is the key.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 04/10/2021 09:36

A doctor told me Lucozade Sport is as good as rehydration sachets. Would he drink that.
Tummy bugs in really little kids seem to go on for ages.

BarbiesWorld · 04/10/2021 09:49

Thank you for replying. I spoke to the GP earlier and they want to check him out in person.

After his last bout of vomiting I've had a shower with him and noticed his legs and tummy are very mottled which is unusual for him and his little hands and feet are freezing, despite the heating being on and having just got out of a warm shower.

Flat sprite is also very good according to my nurse friend

A side effect of the last 18 months is that our immune systems are well out of practice with coming into contact with any germs. Overall it’s a really, really bad thing. We need exposure and for our body to fight diseases.

Try not to worry, just keep giving whatever fluids he will take and make sure he’s peeing regularly.

Babynames2 · 04/10/2021 10:03

What time have the GP said they can see him OP?

For the mottled skin and freezing hands and feet I would be going to a&e myself. It seems like he’s not getting better and those can be signs of more serious illness. I’m not trying to panic or scare you, just if it were me I would be taking him to be seen ASAP. Particularly with being inconsolable and the lack of wetness in his nappies.
