Costco Pumpkin Pie

MrsLeclerc · 03/10/2021 17:50

I’ve always wanted to try a bakery pumpkin pie but I can’t find anywhere local that sells them. I’ve made my own before, but want to try a ‘proper’ one.

In previous years I’d heard Costco sold them and we’ve just got a membership. Do they still sell them each year and if so when should I look out for them?

If they don’t sell them, can anyone recommend a national UK shop/bakery that does?

You should be able to get Libby’s pumpkin pie filling (comes in a tin) at Costco. Follow the directions on the tin and pour into a pie crust. It’s as close to the real thing as it gets.

Sauerkrauted · 03/10/2021 18:17

Honestly, pumpkin pie is so easy to make properly yourself. You just need to get some canned pumpkin from the international aisle in Sainsbury’s or Tesco, some condensed milk, egg and spices. I use vanilla, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon. You can make it for less than £5 which is far less than what you pay in any bakery and the taste is just as good.

MrsLeclerc · 03/10/2021 18:49

Yes I’ve made it many times in previous years, but I’d like to try a bakery one.

It’s a bit like spending years making your own version of a recipe but not knowing what the original should taste like! I like what I make, but have wondered what they should taste like.

This is the group to join and ask about all things Costco. Apparently they did a trial run of pumpkin pie in 2018 in the UK and it didn't sell so hasn't been seen since.

MattDamon · 03/10/2021 19:17

OP, I've seen them in Whole Foods in London in previous years.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 03/10/2021 19:30

I’ve always wanted to try pumpkin pie and like you say I would rather buy one to see what it taste like as I wouldn’t know if one I made even tasted how it should! It’s a shame you can’t seem to buy it anywhere ☹️

Personally, I wouldn't hunt down a Costco pie as it's mass-produced (it's quite far from the bakery you seek, if you know what I mean) and doesn't really surpass a homemade one.

I would imagine yours is very good.

MrsLeclerc · 03/10/2021 19:49

@NapoleonOzmolysis ooh thank you for the Facebook link! Oh that’s disappointing about the Costco ones.

@MattDamon thanks but I’m in Wales.

@BakingOfTheFoodCats exactly! Trying a shop bought/bakery one is on my bucket list now Grin. I’ve been casually looking for the last 3 years and I’m determined that this will be the year I get one!

I might trawl some online bakeries and see if I can get one delivered. If I have any luck I’ll report back Grin.

I agree with @elp30. I am Canadian and make pumpkin pie every year for Thanksgiving. The recipe above tastes better than any shop bought/bakery pie and it’s just not worth it to spend the £20-£30 they always cost. If you’re following a standard recipe it will taste right. The only thing I’d suggest is to make sure you’re using lots of spice, and serve with whipped cream.

I absolutely agree. We started making our own after being unable to find any in our area. The spices are so important, as is the whipped cream. If you whip your own make sure to add a bit of sugar.
DiamondBright · 03/10/2021 19:59

I just follow the recipe on the tin.

TheWoleb · 03/10/2021 20:16

It's basically a custard pie with pumpkin and spice. It's not going to taste much different no matter where you get it. Just the spice mix that can change; there isnt a "right" way to do that so trying one from a bakery wont make it the "right" way.

Whatever way you've made it, if the spice mix is right for you then that's it!

Snoopypants · 03/10/2021 20:37

I agree with previous posters. I lived in the states for a while and the bakery pumpkin pies were no better than the Libby’s pumpkin pie recipe… I made it from real pumpkin before and it wasn’t much different actually.

Piccalino3 · 03/10/2021 21:03

The best pumpkin pie I've ever had was Whole Foods in the UK and I partly grew up in the States and an American parent and siblings, even American relatives have said the same when visiting.

If you can't get to Whole Foods then I'd make my own. It's really not hard to do but you may want to source some canned pumpkin now as it tends to sell out this time of year. I put some squirt cream on top of each slice. It's so delicious!

This. While most Costco products are very good quality, their bakery goods are dreadful, chock full of dozens of artificial ingredients.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/10/2021 21:13

I was so dissapointed to find Costco didn't do Pumkin pies in the UK.
I make my own now I get cans of solid pack pumpkin from Sainsburys and condensed milk and jar of pumpkin spice and go for it.
Theres a recipe on the back of the can and they taste great from a family of Americans here

spotcheck · 03/10/2021 21:14

Pumpkin pie is yummy

That's all
😊

DiamondBright · 04/10/2021 09:17

I thought it was something more American families make at home (maybe with a ready made pastry case) rather than bought. Is that not the case?

That's right. I've never had a store bought pumpkin pie, everyone has their own recipe.
lughnasadh · 04/10/2021 10:39

I think the problem is that pumpkin pie is raved about so much on American TV that other people are hugely disappointed to find it's actualy just a pumpkin custard tart.

It's so 'meh' that people can't believe they've made it properly. Grin

Maybe you haven't made it right, who knows. Mine isn't just a pumpkin custard. I also get requests starting this month and will make them for Thanksgiving as usual.
lughnasadh · 05/10/2021 07:43

Oh, maybe I am doing it wrong Shock

When I googled recipes, there were hundreds, but they were all custard type things with pureed pumpkin and some spices.

What sort of pie is yours?

RoyKentsHairyBack · 05/10/2021 07:59

God I love pumpkin pie. My mum was given a good housekeeping recipe book when she got married in the 60s and in the 'international section there was a recipe. She tried it when I was little then made it every year for years!

Every year I look for one I could buy (preferably a slice of as only me that likes it left now so it goes to waste). NEVER find it.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 05/10/2021 13:59

Still really want to try it, if anyone does find if somewhere let us know!

KloppsTeeth · 05/10/2021 15:21

Canadian Thanksgiving is coming up, and we are all set for pumpkin pie. The main difference between shop bought and the ones you can make here, for where we are from at least, is the Graham cracker base is not readily available. the Costco one here wasn’t very good.
I make my own pumpkin spice by mixing spices myself. One trick I did learn is to buy sweet ground cinnamon (cassia) rather than cinnamon.
I have ditched the pastry base and because we can’t get decent Graham cracker base here, I now make a Pumpkin Crisp (Crumble). Recipes online. Served with whipped cream which includes some icing sugar to sweeten it.

This is also worth a try
