Niggling sensation in teeth

BobaTea · 03/10/2021 17:36

Reposting here for traffic as I didn't get many replies from my other thread.

For over a year, I have this weird sensation in my lower right teeth. Mainly my first molar but I can also feel this sensation in my lower front teeth. It's hard to describe but it doesn't hurt, just this niggling sensation. Sometimes I can feel them click. There is no swelling or redness. Doesn't hurt with pressure. Not very sensitive to hot or cold.

I had it seen by two dentists and x-rays showed no infection. I do have receding gums but it's under controlled. I had my teeth cleaned every six months.

I think I might clench/grind my teeth so I have a custom made mouthguard. The first one was a hard mouthguard which cracked after a few months. Now I wear a soft one to sleep.
I have been wearing my mouthguard since March but this sensation is still there.

Anyone knows what's going on? Thanks.

Quick bump for the evening crowd. Blush

This could be as a result of grinding, I had this and dentist and hygienist both said the tingly niggling feeling was due to damage to enamel. I have a guard too but the tingling went away when I first got it.

BobaTea · 03/10/2021 22:30

@TankFlyBoss, apart from a mouthguard, did you try any toothpastes for the enamel?

Try duraphat toothpaste, it’s high in fluoride. You can buy it from your dentist or get it on prescription, make an appt at ask if they think it will help?
Also your nightguard can be worn at other times that you may grind or clench, driving or working at a computer are times that I clench.
Be aware of resting your jaw, trying to make sure your teeth don’t always meet if you k ow what I mean, rest your jaw by letting it flop kind of thing

BobaTea · 03/10/2021 22:43

Will ask about the Duraphat toothpaste.

I'm just a bit worried that the niggling sensation is not going away despite wearing my guard since March.

Could this be linked to your sinuses, rather than your teeth? Whenever I have a sinus infection I have a niggly feeling in my teeth. Hardcore antibiotics gets rid of it.

BobaTea · 03/10/2021 22:54

I don't think so because it's the bottom right teeth that are affected.

There's no tingling/zapping/throbbing sensations involved is there, OP?

TankFlyBoss · 03/10/2021 23:41

I did start using the expensive pronamel toothpaste actually yes, I don't know if that made a difference. I do know if I leave my guard out for a few nights in a row (I don't mean to but sometimes fall asleep without it) then the tingly feeling comes back and it's like they art sort of bruised.

TremoloGreen · 03/10/2021 23:56

I get this from time to time when I am stressed and it is due to a mix of grinding at night and also jaw/tongue tension - I essentially grimace and push my tongue against my bottom front teeth. I've had to stick a post it on my computer monitor that says RELAX YOUR JAW Grin

BobaTea · 04/10/2021 07:43

@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr, there is no tingly, zapping or throbbing sensations. It's very difficult to describe but the nearest I can describe is sort of like air bubbles in gums/teeth. Sometimes this tight feeling too. It's annoying rather than painful.

@BobaTea if dental causes have been ruled out I'd have a look at a neurological cause. I have trigeminal neuralgia and although it's typified by very, very painful electric shock type pains, I have atypical TN which usually presents as a more constant grumbling pain (I get the shocks too, though). The best way I can describe the non-shocky pains is that I'm constantly aware of my teeth. There's always something strange going on, sensation-wise.

TN usually presents on one side of the face only, too, which is why your description made me think of it.

Hope you get to the bottom of it whatever it is!

BobaTea · 04/10/2021 08:18

@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr, what treatments are there for TN?

Yes, I'm constantly being aware of this weird sensation. Mainly affecting my bottom front to my first molar.

Today I bought this enamel repair toothpaste called Regenerate to see if it helps. Anyone tried this toothpaste before?

I doubt it will help in my case but I thought I just give it a try.

BrilloPaddy · 05/10/2021 21:50

Regenerate didn't work for me. I did a thread a few months back about sensitive teeth and have started to use Biomin F which has been amazing on my teeth, they're much much better. I'm diabetic and think I get nerve pains which was driving me mad. I also use Listerine gum treatment.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/10/2021 21:51

My dentist advised that after brushing with the Pronamel before bed, I should massage a tiny into the bit that was feeling odd, and not rinse it off. Seems to be working.

BobaTea · 05/10/2021 22:02

@BrilloPadddy, where can you Biomin F? I just googled and it seems you can only buy it online?

OP posts:
BobaTea · 05/10/2021 22:04

Also, what does nerve pain feel like? Is it very painful?

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 06/10/2021 07:16

@BobaTea

NHS TN info

I was on tegretol initially, it's actually an epilepsy drug. It worked really well but the side effects were unmanageable so I moved onto amitriptyline which has been very good. I still get attacks and the daily pain/sensations but it's not as bad as without the meds.

TN is usually caused by a blood vessel placing pressure on the trigeminal nerve in the brain stem. Unfortunately it gets worse over time and eventually I'll probably need surgery to relieve that pressure. It's not a nice diagnosis to have and I'm not saying it's what you've got, but it might be worth looking into.

Mine was diagnosed after a particularly awful attack which lasted all weekend - I went to the emergency dental hospital on the Monday morning because I was convinced I had some sort of mega abscess! They examined me and said it sounded like nerve pain not dental pain and X rays conformed there was nothing wrong with my teeth. They told me to get an emergency GP appointment which I did, same day, and he put me on the tegretol while I waited for a neurologist appointment. The neurologist sent me for an MRI and it was confirmed.

My pain is concentrated on the left side. During an attack it starts in the bottom molars and spreads to the top ones. It can also affect my face, nose and scalp. On an ordinary no attack day it's like a constant nagging, dragging, sort of tickling in my teeth. Sometimes it's painful, sometimes it's just distracting.

I hope it's not what you've got because it's horrible, but at least if it is you can start treatment. Good luck OP Flowers

BobaTea · 06/10/2021 07:29

@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr, that sounds awful. Hope you are getting some relief now.

I have a yearly appt with the maxillofacial dept so will mention it to my consultant.

I found the Biomin F online.

My teeth have always been sensitive but since being diabetic, I get this really strong "pulsing" at times and can almost cry if I drink something too hot or cold. It's like a twitching feeling...... my diabetes is well controlled but if I'm unwell at all, I know straight away my BS is high as my teeth start to tingle.

BobaTea · 06/10/2021 16:24

Will try Biomin F after finishing Regenerate.

I really do hope it's just ache from clenching/grinding. It's been over a year, just getting fed up with this daily annoying sensation.

Anyone has a constant toothache/discomfort but x-rays/dentists found nothing wrong?
