If you work or deal with celebrities, how do you address them ? Stage name or everyday name ?

I know she's no longer with us but I can imagine Cilla Black being addressed as Mrs Willis. Reginald Dwight legally changed his name to Elton Hercules John so Mr John seems appropriate enough. I'm not sure about Ringo Starr - would he prefer Mr Starkey ? I would certainly have felt a nincompoop shouting for Captain Beefheart across a crowded room.

Elton is Sir Elton not Mr John.
Most celebrities go by their stage name not their old name. JK Rowling is being addressed as Jo. JK is not her real name.

I work with lots of celebrities, MPs, heads of large companies etc. I always address them how they tell me to and I always pretend to have no idea who they are and focus on my work. I think this is why I am so popular with them.

I’ve done v/o stuff with loads in the past and I can’t think of any who were anything other than first name.

Victoria Beckham once introduced herself to me, like I didn’t know who she was! She was really sweet actually, not what I’d been expecting.

Friend of mine who’s older than me used to work in jazz clubs and apparently Nina Simone was insistent on being Dr Simone. But it was Nina fucking Simone so no one minded.

Thankyou Adrianna. I'd forgotten about EJ's knighthood.

There's an interesting split with those who have titles - some insist on being addressed as Sir Firstname while others prefer not to be. I haven't heard of any Dames insisting on being called Dame Firstname. Sure there are some though.

TheWonderCat · 03/10/2021 12:46

Do their families call them by their stage names?

WildRosie · 03/10/2021 12:55

I've met Sir Paul McCartney post-knighthood and he was addressed simply as Paul by anyone and everyone.

Dame Edna Everidge might be tricky, saying Dame Edna when you know damn well you're talking to a man.

I think Ben Kingsley likes the Sir Ben lark. According to Madeleine Bell, Dusty Springfield was only so when on duty, as it were. Otherwise she was Mary O'Brien.

It varies tbh. Authors I tend to use given name rather than pen name. Actors tend to use professional name or if they are friends a nickname (usually very silly)

mdh2020 · 03/10/2021 15:32

DD worked in the film industry and all actors were called by their stage names. The really well known ones (and I mean well known) were always lovely. It was the ones who were struggling to make a name for themselves who were rude.

Everytime someone starts a celebrity thread I always really hope someone comes along who knew and will share a story about Michael Jackson. It never happens 😕

elbea · 03/10/2021 15:54

I’ve always addressed people in the way they’ve asked.

Dukes/Duchesses by ‘Your Grace’ when in person

‘Sir’ to people with Knighthoods.

If it’s in a work/formal setting usually their PA’s will let you know how to address before meeting.

Joystir59 · 03/10/2021 15:58

Michael Jackson liked being addressed as Michael. He was very professional and exacting to work for, and didn't suffer fools gladly.

GreenClock · 03/10/2021 17:10

I’ve wondered this. How many people call Reese Witherspoon Laura for example. Her close family and old schoolfriends I suppose.

Or maybe they call her Reese Without a spoon!

(I’ll get my coat)

Declan's Patrick MacManus is known as Declan or Dec to friends and family. To everybody else he is Elvis Costello but it would still feel odd for me to be calling him Elvis. Not that it's likely to happen.

It depends on how they introduce themselves, I tend to mirror that.

ShowOfHands · 03/10/2021 18:00

I know or know of a few celebrities and they're mostly first name or nickname. My mate is best friends with an Oscar winning actress (English, brilliant) and is known only by her nickname.

Van Morrison just told us not to look at or speak to him so names weren't an issue.

FindingMeno · 03/10/2021 18:00

I come across them but don't work directly with them. We mutually ignore each other. I generally genuinely don't know who they are till I Google.

I got locked in a shop with him in Sun City by accident. He was very shy and didn’t want to make eye contact with anyone. My friend asked for a photo with him and he said ok. His entourage were calling him Michael
grapewine · 03/10/2021 18:32

I've worked with famous people years back. I was told by PAs or agents how to address them sometimes. Otherwise, I would use titles and last names unless and until they told me what they preferred.

Dreamstate · 03/10/2021 18:33

Oh damn so her name isn't really Reese? Oh dear what hole have I been living in

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 03/10/2021 18:40

You are so lucky!!!!! 💕
