Substances left from evaporation are absorbing uranium (7)

Last letter is E.

I sort of want it to be RESIDUE, because that's a substance left from evaporation. If we assume 'absorbing uranium' means put a U in it, then I've put a U in RESIDE - but I have no idea where the RESIDE came from, so maybe RESIDUE is wrong?

Any help?

I'd love to do cryptics - I got a book of crosswords quite a while ago - but it frustrates me that you have to know so many 'codes' like nautical abbrevs, olde fashioned stuff, rather than just general knowledge and general words! I never feel like I'll learn them all naturally and think it spoils the fun a bit to have a 'translator' guide on hand.

Favourite clues anyone? There's the classic 'only fair' (4) which is simple yet elegant.

@NatriumChloride you’re along the right lines but putting the things inside each other the wrong way round - the spy group goes on the outside…

“Was in charge of” - led? Managed? Directed? Commanded? Oversaw?

It's a short one which is quite common. 'Led' is along the right lines, and might be correct in some clues.

I might have it. Does it begin and end with the same letter?
WithMyEncyclopedia · 14/10/2021 16:46

Does 'repulsed by' imply reversing a word, or mixing up the letters? I don't think I understand that if so.

LavenderAskew · 14/10/2021 16:56

Yes it does start and end with the same letter

WithMyEncyclopedia · 14/10/2021 16:57

If it's what I guess, reading it backwards might help?

PurpleDaisies · 14/10/2021 17:38

Is the spelling mistake in the original clue? I think I can see how it works if so but it’s not quite one I’ve seen before.

PurpleDaisies · 14/10/2021 18:53

Oh wait, it’s just repulsed as in put backwards! I was over thinking it.

WithMyEncyclopedia · 14/10/2021 20:00

I've googled it now but I'd never have worked out that 'repulse' = deflect = force backwards! I got it anyway but...

I think it is:

Fair minded people = the definition
Repulsed means read a word backwards, and that word is another way of saying 'temper tantrums'
