Pregnant but a picky eater

Disneygirl123 · 02/10/2021 23:46

Hi I have just found out I am pregnant last week. So far its not going great and I am constantly feeling sick and not wanting to eat because I dont want to be sick. The most I have eaten is egg on toast for dinner but it takes me an hour to eat this.

I am very picky when it comes to food so I am really unsure on what I should be doing and what I should be forcing myself to eat.

Any suggestions would be amazing. I have never been pregnant before and I haven't told anyone so I really dont have anyone to talk to.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First trimester- whatever will go down! It's just about survival. Baby is tiny and will take what it needs. Take a prenatal, gummies will probably be easier on your stomach. If you can't manage that just take folic acid- that's the most important thing.

For a couple of weeks I had frozen belgian waffles with berries for dinner because that was all that would go down. I graduated onto pesto pasta at around 10 weeks. Didn't eat a real meal until 13 weeks and even still struggled at 18!

Later on, try and eat a balance diet as best you can.

It's great if you can handle eggs. They are an excellent source of nutrition. Just eat what and when you can and don't worry about the baby. The baby will be just fine.

Unless you are emetophobic, in which case I understand this might not be an option for you, eating when you feel nauseous is a good technique for reducing nausea; you're partly feeling ill because your blood sugar is down, so getting anything to stay in for a brief period is better than nothing as you'll get at least a tiny amount of energy from it - and, gross though it sounds, actually throwing up can give you a brief respite from the feeling as well.

I had HG each time and have had to take medication that causes long term nausea before now, combined with a very sore mouth, ulcers and a distorted sense of taste. Salty things, sweet things - never milky, fatty things - help deal with low blood sugar and dehydration. Plain water is likely to make you feel terrible, but small sips of Lucozade aren't as bad. If all you can manage is a packet of Pom Bears over the course of about three hours, two Haribos and some sugary fluids, that's what you do. Others can manage olives, cubes of cheese and cooked ham or suchlike. Again, it's what you can get down you and get to stay down for more than a couple of minutes that matters, whatever it is.

At the same time, be careful with brushing your teeth. You'll still need to do it, but I'd strongly recommend that you don't try and brush your tongue for a few weeks.

Outside of HG, most people seem to feel it's at its worst around 9 weeks and then it begins to ease slowly. But if you can't even do sips of drink, see the GP, as it is something that can put you into hospital if left untreated (and affects the likelihood of keeping folic acid or iron tablets down if you turn out to be anaemic).

Plain, salty or sweet foods worked for me. Pasta with a sprinkle of cheese. I think I ate pasta and mint sauce a few times! Basically anything you feel like you can eat. From experience, I'd advise against both popcorn and mashed potato from a packet.

I couldn't drink plain water, unless very cold so sips of iced water was ok. I kept it in a thermos to keep it cold at work. It might be worth looking at some isotonic sports drinks. Some don't have caffeine in and are often easier to keep down than water.

Don’t worry too much, I’m very much not a picky eater - very adventurous and love to try new things - and I’m currently in my first trimester of my second pregnancy. Like the last time with DD, all I can face is super plain stuff - white bread, mild cheese, plain crisps. Very little nutritional value in my diet right now! But I was exactly the same last time and my DD is the picture of health Smile

After the first trimester do try and find a balanced diet that works for you - think about each element you need in your diet (iron, protein, fat etc) and find something that ticks the box. It really doesn’t matter if you eat the same thing each day Smile and yes, do try and make sure you get your prenatal vitamins down you, not just for baby but also because they’ll help you not feel completely rubbish!

Congratulations!

Take folic acid and vitamin D tablets, they are very small and much easier to take than the big pregnancy multivitamin tablets, which made me nauseous (even though my nausea wasn't too bad).

Try to eat little and often. Plain things. I found the nausea was worse if I was hungry. I ate a lot of jacobs cream crackers in the first trimester!

You say you're a "fussy eater", what would you usually eat and what would you usually avoid?

Disneygirl123 · 03/10/2021 12:00

Yes I have got the Pregacare max which has folic acid and other vitamins needed. I have only just found out last week and I am 7/8 weeks so went for the max to be on safe side.

When I say I am a picky eater I dont eat anything to adventurous. My diet usually consists of the same food. Sunday roast, steak, cod or salmon, pastas etc
