Help! Anaemic and SO weary, iron tablets not helping

Is there anything else I can do to feel better? Dr said it can take upto 6 months for iron levels to get back up buy I'm so tired I want to cry at the thought of walking 5 minutes to my local shop 😩. I can't bear to feel like this for months, is there anything else I can do to help feel better?

I really recommend anyone with very low iron to push for infusions, not oral forms of replacement. IV treatment is much safer than it used to be, and it's given in hospital just in case you have an adverse response. GPs often aren't up to date on the safer modem versions of IV iron.

I'm not a medic but happy to advise based on my own results if it would help.

Sorry OP haven’t read all the responses so unsure if somebody has already mentioned this or not but what about an iron infusion? It’s meant to work a lot faster than the tablets, have u spoken to ur GP and told him/her just how ill u feel? Request an IV and see what the response is x

Not rtft but I took a vitamin c tablet daily with iron supplements as it just wasn't absorbing for me. It boosted my levels really quickly.

Have they looked into why your iron levels are so low? It's all well and good taking the tablets, but if they don't look at the root cause, it's not really going to help long term.
In my case mine are due to extremely heavy periods. I've recently had a procedure to help and so far, nothing has changed :( I am meant to take 2x200mg ferrous sulphate every day, but they were making me feel so ill, I am now taking one a day or every other day. It has made me feel a little better, but today is a bad day and I am wiped.
My ferritin was 3 and my hg was 81 4 weeks ago and not sure what it's at now.

@RandomMess

I would be insisting that your your Vit D is tested as well as a rerun on bloods.

Research taking iron, I think you should take it with orange juice and no caffeine/tannin etc.

I had lowing iron and Vit D deficiency felt utterly dreadful.

You also need to know why your iron is low!! Mine was super heavy long periods and they focused on fixing that fortunately rather than just bunging me on iron tablets.

@RandomMess

This i my issue too. Can I please ask how the fixed this for you?

OP, I got an iron infusion.

I had womb ablation in my late 30s as my family was complete.

My heavy bleeding was caused by fibroids which I had a hysterectomy to resolve.

Further tests also showed, endometriosis, deficient Vit D and B12 and a hormone imbalance.
Resolved with progesterone.

Honestly, I find it really frustrating how women's health is so overlooked.
I would suggest really pushing for the root cause as PP said.

I tried but it took emergency blood transfusions to be taken seriously and even then I had to push for the 'why'.

Sadly, I would suggest going private for a consultation to get some answers/ plan that you can return to GP with.
