Do I need a snowsuit for my toddler?

I'm starting to sort out what my toddler (2yo) may need for winter as he is going up a size and the temperature is dropping. I have two decent second hand Trespass coats. A lighter one and a thicker one in his size. Do I need to get a snowsuit too? I live in the south of England so whilst it gets cold it isn't cold cold. I have got waterproof dungarees which are fleece lined. Would that be ok under his coat for when it isn't wet but very cold? I know I probably sound stupid but I don't want to waste money if I don't need too. And yes PFB here Blush

I'd have thought the waterproof dungarees under his coat would be perfect. Even if it snows small kids get fed up after a short while.

Has he got fleece lined wellies or snow boots? Wellies are really cold to wear.

I have a 2 year old and I prefer to have 2 sets of wet weather stuff just in case we want to go out morning & afternoon or if it doesn’t dry one day to the next. Am also in the SE

Due to hand me Downs I have lots of coats & a couple of pairs of waterproof dungarees also with a shower proof all in one.

But we have dogs and spend a lot of time outside. Another mum commented that she only goes to the playground in good weather so would need less waterproofs

Look for local second hand via FB etc for back ups 👍

I think you are quite well prepared. You can always put extra layers on underneath the coats/dungarees if you are worried, but ime when it actually snows they run around like mad things and their core temp stays high. Their extremities get a bit cold in snow, but I wouldn't mind about that, I'd just bring them in every so often. If your two year old can keep gloves on then I'd get some. I think I had fleece mittens at that age.

If you are still using the pushchair I had a footmuff that was thick and huge, and I would prioritise that over a snow suit - when they're just sitting there they can get very cold.

I would get a fleece lined puddlesuit rather than a snowsuit. You can use it for more of the year
Ours is a mountain warehouse one. It is in constant use for wet days on the school run!

Thank you for your responses. He also has a Lidl all in one puddlesuit but it is thin if we wanted to go out twice but it was wet. He is a chunky tbing so currently he has faux fur lined Chelsea wellies but will need a new pair before long. I remember ages ago someone mentioning waterproof snow boots but I cannot remember the brand. We love being out so a back up might be wise but I'm thinking probably what I have is enough for now. I can layer him up with clothes under the waterproofs. I have a fleece foot muff too for his stroller.

The waterproof dungarees and coat will be fine.

An alternative for very wet days is also a proper waterproof puddle suit - trespass and regatta are quite good for these. You want to make sure it’s properly waterproof though

Waterproof suit without padding will be the most useful along with wellies, and wool socks for cold days. John Lewis do reasonably priced wool blend socks for kids.

Another tip, going out for a cold adventure make sure he is toasty warm at home or in car first. Then there's more heat to keep trapped in under clothes layer.

Enjoy the puddle jumper days, they are precious times 😍

I never bought snowsuits for my DCs after they were babies as I just never thought we'd have enough cold/snow to get the wear out of them. They've always had a puddle suit or waterproof trousers and a warm coat and wellies. If you don't want to buy more expensive snow boots you can get special welly socks for children that are thicker. They're great for things like bonfire night and cold days. Maybe a nice fluffy snood or scarf to keep the draught off their neck?

I'd always wait until late in winter to hear chance of snow before I bought ski mittens - they are essential for snowman building! Sometimes you can pick those up cheaply in Aldi or H&M do them.

I always used the fleeces lined waterproof trousers under a coat. If it got really cold, I used the put knitted leggings under trousers under the waterproofs. Layers are generally warmer and my boys were never cold. I also found this gave better movements as they got more active.

@Sesamebagel.
Hi Sesame. Former childminder here (20 years exp) . What you have sounds absolutely fine. As pps have said keep an eye out maybe on face book or in the charity shops just for spares. Maybe get a cheap pair of wellies (and some for you) as toddlers love to puddle jump. As you said though with clothes you can layer up and no point in spending money that you don't need to.
Have fun.
