Multiple birthday cakes

Just wondering what everyone else does for DC birthdays. If they are having a party, do you still do a small cake for their actual birthday and then the main cake for their party?

DDs birthday was this week. She took cupcakes into nursery to share with her class, then had a small supermarket cake with candles etc at teatime with the family. Then for her party this weekend she is having the main cake which we are baking and putting a bit of effort into.

I used to do it the other way round. I once spent ages cooking and decorating a cake for my then 5 year old which was served at a party and it was almost all left because by then the children had eaten enough. I'm not a great cake-maker so it really upset me that all my efforts were wasted.

I started buying cake for children's parties after that. I used to get supermarket ones with fondant icing as they were better for putting in party bags, and I didn't mind if they were wasted. I made nice ones for family celebrations at which they would be appreciated!

I used to buy two supermarket cakes and cut one up for the party bags prior to the party and take the one they blew the candles out with (controversial now obviously!) home.
I wasn't going to faff about cutting cake for party bags during the actual party.

No other cakes though and I CBA to make one.

It sounds like you made enough cake for three separate occasions which hopefully allowed everyone present to have some cake, it's clever. I couldn't be bollocked to cut a 2 tier sponge at my DS birthday parties so I had cupcakes made but I always baked a birthday cake for the day of his birthday. His school banned cake about 4 years ago so we never got to do that, apparently a 2.5" piece of cake is the leading cause of obesity in the world Hmm I make everyone a cake for their birthday though, I love baking Grin

DS2's birthday was Monday and I made an elaborate homemade chocolate orange carrot cake for the family. I sent in packaged little cakes to school as it's a nut free environment so bought stuff is safer. His party is tomorrow and I have made a very basic cake, just a vanilla sheet cake with chocolate frosting and sprinkles.

I am up late stressing about the weather as all he wanted was a piñata and an outdoor nerf wars party for the whole class - but the precise time of the party is supposed to be strong rain and winds after a gorgeous day today Sad

@Xiaoxiong I hope the party went well. We also we're hoping to be outdoors for DD's party today which obviously didn't happen, but think we got away with it.

I think I might go with what others are saying here and do the main cake ok the actual birthday next year. It always feels like a bit of a let down otherwise, whereas the party is always fun and energetic anyway, whatever cake is served!

@Ricepops we were outdoors for the first hour or so - all the kids got soaked to the skin but from the shrieking and charging around, they seemed to have fun Confused

I'm really glad the birthday cake at the party wasn't one I slaved over, most kids took one or two bites max or just licked the icing off and a lot of it went in the bin at the end...sigh...

And of course today is again, glorious sunshine!! Angry Oh well - one of the parents said "thanks so much for having a party on a rainy day as otherwise I'd have to entertain my kids myself" Grin

I don’t do treats for the class, never have, it was banned at nursery and impractical at school. I make a pair of standard round chocolate cakes - one for actual birthday at home/with family and one for the party. Chocolate cake, chocolate icing, smarties or Maltesers on top - all sorted. This year though the party cake will be cupcakes, but same recipe and decorating. I don’t see the point in elaborate cakes for small children.

Cake for school (not allowed to be homemade anymore, has to be sealed individual sweets of choc of some kind)
Cake for party
Cake for family 1 or 2 depending on availability
Cake for swimming friends
Cake for kids in the communal garden

One of those is usually fairy cakes, so if b'day isn't the same day as when family come round or party we'll eat a couple of those.

We only eat cake around the DC's birthdays! That's enough baking to last a year Grin
