Different CVs for different roles

I've always heard this is the done thing, but today I have been told "one size fits all"... What do you thin

The only point of a CV is to get you an interview.

No two job ads are the same

So, no two CVs (that I send out) are the same. They’re tailored to the ad.

Who said one size fits all?

Kayl23 · 01/10/2021 20:20

You can probably get away with not writing a new CV for each job advert, but I would definitely recommend having different CV's that are tailored to each sector if you're applying for different types of jobs. For example one highlighting why you'd be good at working in retail, one highlighting why you're good at office work etc

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 01/10/2021 20:20

It depends. You want the cv to sell you as suitable for the role you're applying for. That will often mean tailoring it each time but if the times you are applying for are substantially similar then you may only need one.

This is what Id recommend too

Different every time. Highlighting the particular strengths.

I've been interviewed every time so it can't be that wrong.

Terribleluck · 01/10/2021 20:59

Long story short... I asked a "professional" to work on my CV. I said I wanted at least two, because my experience is hard to summarise and my job titles are misleading to an extent. She then said no, I only recommend one. So then I posted on FB and almost everyone thought I should use the same one. But I known for years (live you've all mentioned) that for the most part, for every role I apply for I should tailor my CV to it.

I would have a master cv with everything on it
Then edit and pick and choose things to fit job description.

Ragwort · 01/10/2021 22:43

That sounds terrible advice, I would always tailor a CV for the role ... thought everyone did that? Confused

dangermouseisace · 01/10/2021 23:11

You big up the bits relevant to the role you are applying for, and have basic info on the irrelevant stuff on your CV. Otherwise surely the person reading it will be looking for a needle in a haystack, and will probably decide it's not worth the effort.

Terribleluck · 02/10/2021 08:22

I agree it does seem like terrible advice, especially if experience is varied throughout the years. I'm really glad I asked here, I thought I was going mad!

You can't prepare CVs in advance. You can have a few different ones but then you still need to TAILOR it to the specific job otherwise forget it.
