Is this a false widow spider?

So I have many many many of these. I’m pretty sure they are all false widows. The evil fuckers make the most evil looking egg sacks, like something from Alien. NC incase anyone from real life recognises the pictures! The picture is of a dead one after I sprayed it. But they are the most resilient things and won’t die and they are everywhere outside my house, in my garden furniture etc. The egg sacs seem to have hundreds/thousands of eggs.

If they hatch/I miss a nest next year I might have to move.

This is my false widow. I have the seek app and it identifies them from a picture and id this one. I put yours pic but it wasn't clear from the picture- just said spider.

Maybe down load the app and take a few more pics if you can bear it.

Not 100% sure there are three types arnt there?

Can you just pour boiling water over them?

SquareWindow · 02/10/2021 10:37

This spider was already dead when I photographed it, I wasn’t going to hang around! It’s the horrible 1cm egg sacks which are so unusual. Haven’t heard of the app will take a look thanks.

I was sure we had an actual black widow in the last house, was black like your false widow but had a bright red spot on it and it looked truely terrifying, always worried as it didn’t get killed that it moved with the movers as it was seen on the shed.

The app said cobweb but then found this website which seems to match mine. Can’t pour boiling water in the roof of the garage!

Yes it's a false widow- sorry. I have loads of them. There's a really good spider spray which kills them on Amazon in a red spray can. It's just called spider spray.

autumn1638 · 02/10/2021 10:48

It's called pet shield spider killer spray. Red aerosol can.

Autumngoldleaf · 02/10/2021 10:54

@autumn1638

Can you confirm they die quickly with this spray?

autumn1638 · 02/10/2021 11:16

No they don't die quickly they kind of get stunned and run around confused and then die. If there's one inside I hit it. I sprayed the wood store because it was infested and it cleared them out. I also use it around the windows where they nest and it stops them nesting there. For me the thing is to keep them out of the house. I don't really mind them being in the garden so long as they are not on the wood as they get brought in with it. I don't like the round windows or doors obviously...

BewareTheLibrarians · 02/10/2021 12:17

Why do they need to die though? They’re not harmful, and they do a useful job of eating any bugs/flies that are lurking around. There’s a false widow living in my kitchen right now, and it hasn’t eaten any of us Grin

Last year, there was a female false widow on our bathroom window, then a male appeared and they started ahem a brief relationship which was going well until another male appeared, and things became a bit tense. Roll on a few days and both the males vanished, leaving behind a very content female.

Autumngoldleaf · 02/10/2021 12:23

False widows are harmful.
New data has shown their bite is more harmful than previously thought.. They also kill and wipe out native English spiders they multiple and colonise at incredible speed if you let them.

Autumngoldleaf · 02/10/2021 12:24

Red raid does same then.

rocklamp · 02/10/2021 12:25

Why do people have to kill everything? They're not dangerous. We share our inside and outside spaces with these types of spider and have never had a problem.

Ds1 was bitten by a tegenaria domestica a few weeks ago, but probably because he accidently compressed it when he was in bed.

Spiders are useful and don't bother people if left alone.

Autumngoldleaf · 02/10/2021 12:33

False widows multiply in a prolific way.
Due to their sheer numbers when not culled its very common to therfore find them in bed, in clothing. That's how people get bitten and a high volume of those that get bitten end up in hospital with intravenous antibiotics.

It’s worth remembering that any spider bite or insect bite has the potential to leave you hospitalised, as breaking the skin can introduce bacteria to your system leading to cellulitis etc.

Fuck Envy

OP they aren't evil. Please stop spraying them with deadly chemicals and scalding them to death.

Bollocks. Very few people are bitten by false widows.
userxx · 02/10/2021 13:39

I've got a friend like this, kills spiders for absolutely no other reason then she's scared of them 🙄. Really hope she comes back as a spider in her next life.

BewareTheLibrarians · 02/10/2021 13:57

From the article I posted, in case some posts have scared people who are already phobic of spiders:

“No one has died as a consequence of spider venom in the UK, whereas around five people a year are killed by wasp and bee stings, and several people die annually from dog attacks. Spider bites seem to tap into our deepest fears, but remember that many of us have lived with, and will continue to live with, noble false widow spiders around our homes with no ill effects.”

StaplesCorner · 02/10/2021 14:02

I do get these outside the house but I am careful to check inside - I don't want to kill anything but I have a skin condition and if I were bitten I'd be a big risk for cellulitis.

noblegiraffe · 02/10/2021 14:06

I put it in the Seek app and it said common house spider.

It does look a bit like one although they’re supposed to be American.

We have 2 false widows in our parcel box, I open the box each day and say 'hello Ermentrude and Gertrude, just getting my post' we remove them and their eggs every year with the harmless spider hoover and every sodding year 2 more take up residence.

MintJulia · 02/10/2021 14:13

False widows aren't native. Killing them is perfectly legitimate.

Personally I find a rolled up newspaper is very effective. Why waste money on spray?
