How do i heat one room all day cheaply?

Ds is studying at home, hes cold during the day. We're in Scotland. I put the heating on yesterday but it heats all the house including radiators that are broken and I can't turn them down.
So is it cheaper to buy him a wee heater for his room alone? Rather than turn the house heating on all day?

A heater in the one room should be okay. Perhaps get him a heated blanket as well.

We use an aladdin paraffin lamp to heat individual rooms, but I guess that wouldn't appeal to most people. Ds did have a small, electric fan heater, but he dropped it and it broke.

I was listening to Jeremy Vine today and he was speaking about heating costs, one of his callers called in to recommend heated vest. Ideal as it moves round with you! Would that be a n idea for your son?
I just found this link! www.msn.com/en-gb/lifestyle/rf-best-products-uk/best-heated-vest-for-men-reviews#:~:text=Product%20comparison%20table%20%20%20%20%23%20,%20%207.3%20%206%20more%20rows%20

Those wee fan heaters cost an arm n a leg to run believe it or not..

FusionChefGeoff · 01/10/2021 18:59

Ooh following as I'm also wondering if whole house heating is cheaper than a fan heater...

MorganSeventh · 01/10/2021 18:59

Yes, electric fan heaters cost a bomb to run. Oil filled radiators are meant to be one of the cheapest forms of space heating to run if that's a possibility. Or a heated blanket?

christmassausages · 01/10/2021 19:01

Get one of those little pills filled radiators. We used them overnight in a static all the time and they were great. Cheap to run and safe.

Slippers or slipper socks and layers as well.

christmassausages · 01/10/2021 19:02

Oil filled not pills filled obviously

WTFCanIDoAboutThis · 01/10/2021 19:03

I've just invested in an electric throw for when I'm WFH as my little office is freezing and I don't want to turn the heating on. My friend swears by them and avoids turning the heating on for most of the winter.

dementedpixie · 01/10/2021 19:05

An oil filled electric heater is not too expensive to run. Don't get a fan heater

AdaColeman · 01/10/2021 19:05

Oil filled radiator is a good idea, extra layers of clothing, especially a woolly hat as you lose a lot of your heat through your head, fingerless gloves, thermal socks, plenty of hot drinks.

Jellykat · 01/10/2021 19:19

We use a little 500w oil filled radiator for DS who WFH..
Thats basically half your KWh rate per hour (for us 9p an hour) it won't make the room 'hot', but comfortable temperature wise.

CMOTDibbler · 01/10/2021 19:45

My home office is much colder than the rest of the house so I wear fake ugg boots, then have a heated throw over my legs/lap/waist. A fleece jacket (or blazer when I'm on camera) and a naice scarf and I'm toasty.

Newnormal99 · 01/10/2021 19:56

I wear fluffy slipper boots, a fleecy top and have an oil filled radiator.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/10/2021 20:00

I'm a bit disgusted with all the people suggesting he just puts on an extra layer. That doesn't work as it doesn't heat the air around you. Get him a heater, halogen ones are supposed to be quite efficient.

starpatch · 01/10/2021 20:01

I use a lakeland heated clothes airer to heat my office ( single room sized). Low cost and with the door closed it is warm (sometimes even too hot)

Some people, a lot of people, will not be able to afford to buy a heater let alone put the heating on. Things will be tight.

I’ve found a decent army style woollen blanket is the dogs bollocks for keeping me warm, with a hot water bottle. Itchy but you can use a layer of fleece as well.

Although OP, if you can afford to, get the heating serviced including looking at the radiators.

userxx · 01/10/2021 20:03

Oil filled radiator.

littlebay · 01/10/2021 20:05

I have a sheepskin rug over my office chair which makes a huge difference when wfh in winter.

AttaGirrrrl · 01/10/2021 20:05

I bought a heated throw during lockdown so that I just kept myself warm rather than the whole house.

HereticFanjo · 01/10/2021 20:08

Oil filled radiator is good if heat is needed. That plus a big jumper and blanket!

NigellaSeed · 01/10/2021 20:11

My friend swears by her hallogen heater. Although I don't think you can replace the bulb so I'm not sure it's that eco friendly....

Thighdentitycrisis · 01/10/2021 20:15

I have an old ceramic heater - are they fuel efficient?

RampantIvy · 01/10/2021 20:15

Convector heater
