Mumsnet haircut? Who remembers?

I look like a hippy witch on a Van der Graaf generator because I'm immunosuppressed, middle aged, and reluctant to brave the hairdressers.

I was remembering the Mumsnet cut where you do a high ponytail then cut it off for a mid length layered bob.

Anyone tried it or any tips for an easy DIY cut?

Also may be useful for many of us about to be hammered by the various price hikes and UC reduction.

Ceecee that looks quite ok actually

Dd cut her own hair when she was about three and looked like this.
I made her wear a hat for months.

I've been doing it for years...most recently about a fortnight ago.

I take off anywhere between 1 and 3 inches.

Sometimes I tie the top section separately, then do the overall length which reduces the likelihood of ending up with a mullet.

ISpy you've put me off now. That is a classic 70s 'mum cut my hair' cut

My mum used to cut my hair like that, and it did look nice. I do have very long hair tho, that probably makes a difference as I imagine the layers can end up very short about your face if you’re not careful.
I find it easiest to split my hair in two, and tie it under my chin, as smooth as possible, then just trim the ends. Gently gently tiny bit at a time. I think it looks alright!

SoisGentil · 01/10/2021 18:28

Minty I'll give you first refusal to come and cut mine-you sound so confident and professional there!

Ugh that sounds quite doable

@SoisGentil I'm just lucky that I have thick hair with a slight natural wave so it's quite easy to get away with stuff like this.

Until 6 weeks ago I'd been cutting and colouring my own hair for 2.5 years!

SoisGentil · 01/10/2021 18:33

Minty mine is thick and a bit wavy too!

I loved the MN haircut, did it for years when my hair was really long.

It was fine, my hairdresser wasn’t very impressed when I eventually did pay for a haircut but as my hair was wavy, I never noticed it wasn’t straight and no one else commented🤣

I had all my hair cut off but got fed up with short hair so am now growing it again, may have to revisit the MN haircut as I absolutely hate going to the hairdressers.

SoisGentil · 01/10/2021 19:12

After all that I don't know whether I'll give it a go or not! Maybe YouTube and gin will help me decide

I do it and have done for years. Thick and a bit wavy is the best hair for it. Brush it through, turn upside down and gather it in a ponytail on top /front of your head, where your horn would be if you were a unicorn.
You’ll look insane, but keep the faith.
I cut it about 4 inches above the bobble-maybe start a bit higher while you see how it turns out? It’s surprisingly hard to cut (even with Superdrug’s finest hairdressing scissors) so steady away and you’ll end up with a curve of hair sticking up out of the bobble, following the curve of your head-ish.
Let it down and behold the gentle layers framing your face and carefully snip out any rogue dangly bits that fall in your face
Good luck!! Gin

MintyCedric · 01/10/2021 19:38

Go for it...just take it about half and inch at a time and check in between cuts

LagneyandCasey · 01/10/2021 20:04

It can work and look good if your hair isn't too short. Make sure you brush it really smooth and take plenty of time doing the ponytail and making sure it's central.

The layers aren't as short at the front if you put the ponytail a bit further back towards the top of your head.

After you've cut it chop into the 'stub' a bit to soften the layers.

Scarby9 · 01/10/2021 20:08

I cut my own hair during lockdown, but didn't brave the mumsnet hig ponytail.
I put my hair on two bunches over my ears, then pulled the elastics down to chin level, che ked they were at an even height and chopped both bunches off.
Genuinely a success! A really neat bouncy bob, graduatin from chin level at the front to collar length at the back.

SmellyOldOwls · 01/10/2021 20:12

I've done it. Despite cutting off several inches my hair remained the same length Confused

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 01/10/2021 20:14
Try Brando Munro’s version instead
Don't try to do this on yourself. I did and accidentally chopped off a massive chunk at the front. Not good. I saved it with the old faithful mumsnet haircut :) but YouTube it, don't just lop the ponytail off, you need to get the angle right.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 01/10/2021 20:15

I have done it for about 5 years. Not sure how you end up with a fringe/ mullet?? I'm very happy with it and get compliments every time I do it. I have bra strap length hair, very slight wave, neither thick nor thin, so I can get away with my cutting not being 100% perfect. This is convenient, quick and flattering and I am saving a bloody fortune. Frankly I see no reason to go back to the hairdresser's.

SirChenjins · 01/10/2021 20:15

I did it on DD’s long hair - it looked really good

BeyondShrinks · 01/10/2021 20:16

I've done it for years, I also dye it myself.
Salons aren't great for wheelchairs.

Etinox · 01/10/2021 20:18

I used to do the Mumsnet cut, with ok results. It’s longer now so I put it in a pony tail, add another band an inch up and cut. Worth getting proper hairdressing scissors and feathering. I posted this pic earlier today about the diy colour/ grey blending.

Thisismysexboardname · 01/10/2021 20:20

I still do it, always unimpressed with what hairdressers do, this never lets me down!

BillinaTheChickenQueen · 01/10/2021 20:21

I used to do it - back in the day.
I remember a really kind mner - a dragon of some sort doing a bit of a tutorial.
It’s not going to look like a brilliantly well done haircut but it’s absolutely fine if you need to tidy up and you’re scent.
