Would I miss this door?

We have a rear kitchen door that leads to the garden patio. We also have a conservatory that opens onto the garden patio as well. We generally use the kitchen rear door more than the conservatory door because we are in the kitchen more. I'm currently getting a new kitchen designed and it's been suggested that we could brick in the door which would allow for more worktop space and storage. I can't decide if I'd miss the kitchen door too much or not. Anyone done similar?

Are your bins just outside the kitchen door? When you go out via that door, what are you going to do? Hang out washing?

I don't think I'd get rid of a kitchen door to outside, it's useful for things like taking bins out, hanging washing up outside etc. If the conservatory is used more as a living space do you want all that going through it and everyone's outdoor shoes by the door?

Have you got a floor plan?

Lock it and hide the key for a week and see if you miss it?

I think you'd miss it

Suzysunflower · 01/10/2021 17:32

also, does it let light in?

We use the sliding patio doors next to the kitchen for going in and out. The bins are round the corner. Adds about 2 feet to the walk to get out, and nothing to the trip to the bins.
I'd love to brick up the kitchen door area and have a nice big American fridge in that spot.
Try it. Lock the kitchen door, put things in the way, like the bin and the cat/dog bowls and use the other door to see what it's like.

Rough floor plan attached

We don't use it to access bins. Occasionally to stick an airer with washing outside. It's nice in the summer to let fresh air through. Yes it let's light in but I also have two kitchen windows next to it.

I have a similar set-up though in my case the kitchen door goes into the utility room and then there is an outside door from that.

There is no way I would get rid of that door, partly because it would me going round through the rest of the house when I wanted to hang out the washing or take the rubbish out, and partly because I prefer not to have the conservatory door open too much in the winter when we are trying to conserve heat (the conservatory is actually our main sitting room).

Brick it up and get a fire extinguisher in the event you are trapped in the kitchen with a fire.

We did this in our new house, we have french doors leading into the garden from the lounge/diner. I really don't miss the kitchen door and am grateful for the extra worktop space.

I agree with @Knitwit101 lock it or put something heavy / awkward yo pick up in front of it for a few weeks and see if you miss it.

Will going through the conservatory door mean walking on carpet?
