Numb right side and mouth, blurred vision

randomnumbness · 01/10/2021 12:13

A few years ago I got numbness/pins and needles on my left side and mouth along with blurry vision. I was told it could be a TIA.

I moved house and experienced the same symptoms on a few separate occasions. My previous medical history was lost and I was told this time it wouldn't be a TIA due to my age (early 30's). No other cause was suggested though.

I'v had the same thing happen again this morning - random numbness down my right hand side, my tongue and blurred vision. Left with a slight headache which is unusual for me. Has anyone else suffered the same issues and worked out what it is?

Just to be clear i am not a medical professional here and would advise you to seek further investigation but could it be a migraine?
Again i am not diagnosing you over the internet and i would, if it were me, be pushing for further investigation of such symptoms.

mumsie8 · 01/10/2021 12:18

Plus context. Are you/were you stressed today or in past situations? Were there outside mitigating factors that could have or do play a part in the timing of when these symptoms occur?

FreeBritnee · 01/10/2021 12:19

I think you need to go back to the doctor. I’d want to be ruling out MS as one potential condition.

I have this with migraines, but I get sent to a neurologist every time my symptoms change.
I often have migraines without headaches or with short (less than 5 minutes) or mild headaches. It’s not always a severe headache.

SecretDoor · 01/10/2021 12:41

Contact the GP

chesirecat99 · 01/10/2021 12:42

Those are classic migraine symptoms, especially the fact that it is on one side. You can get the aura (things like flashing lights, blurry vision, pins and needles) without developing a headache. You need to go to the GP as this is new.

Do you take the combined contraceptive pill? You may need to change to the progesterone only pill as there is a slightly increased risk of stroke with the combined pill if you have migraine with aura. The pill can also make migraine worse or better.

SpamIAm · 01/10/2021 12:56

As previous posters have said, they could be migraine symptoms and that was my first thought. I think it would be unusual for it to change sides though (or maybe I'm unusual in that Mike are always the same side?).

Regardless, it obviously could be something more serious and new migraine symptoms should always be checked out anyway. So get thee to a doctor.

AttaGirrrrl · 01/10/2021 12:59

Isn’t this a 999 situation?

Came here to say Google hemiplegia migraines.

And 100% go back to your GP and insist.

randomnumbness · 01/10/2021 13:02

Thank you everyone. I have definitely had one migraine before as a result of some medication but that 'only' caused blurred vision - it was awful, I couldn't actually do anything for hours. I had no idea they could cause numbness so ruled them out but having read the symptoms on google just now it sounds spot on.

Just seen I made a mistake in my original post, it's always been my right side that's gone numb.

I'm not on any hormonal contraception. It was light that triggered the one I definitely had.

I agree it's sounding like migraines, but often migraines and strokes can have similar symptoms. It's really important you go to the Dr and ask for an investigation. An MRI can detect anything abnormal and if it is migraine related you can be prescribed medication for them.

randomnumbness · 01/10/2021 13:04

I was offered an MRI over 2 years ago but haven't been offered an appointment yet I assume due to covid.

Did you have weakness on that side, trouble lifting your arm, face drop, problems with your speech? If so I would suggest you go to A&E and get checked over, even it appears to have resolved.

It may well be a migraine, but better safe than sorry.

Badabingbadabum · 01/10/2021 13:11

I suffer migraines and do occasionally get them with the numbness, pins and needles, slurred speech. Definitely make an appointment with your GP again and I would probably go to a&e while it was happening the next time I had one. Strokes and TIAs are rare in young people but they do happen.

ohfourfoxache · 01/10/2021 13:26

Erm…A&E please

chesirecat99 · 01/10/2021 13:33

No, it doesn't change sides during an attack but many people have migraines occur on different sides at different times.

Hullabaloo31 · 01/10/2021 13:36

I'd say prob migraine too, but def something that needs checking out now for TIA/stroke just in case.

Gingerkittykat · 01/10/2021 13:38

Go to A and E or get a GP appointment today.

It could be a migraine but those symptoms are far too serious to ignore.

museumum · 01/10/2021 13:41

It could be migraine. My symptoms are similar. But you need a GP review of your medications (contraceptive as well as migraine) and possibly more tests. I have a prescription medication for migraines and strongly advise this and working with your gp over self diagnosing and using over the counter.

PrestonHood121 · 01/10/2021 14:02

Tongues numbness, pins and needles, blurry vision were my early MS symptoms. Please get it checked - early to mid 30s is a common age for diagnosis in women. Highly treatable if discovered in time. Push for an mri

HeadPain · 01/10/2021 14:04

Not sure if this is, but any stroke/TIA symptom you should call 999, the operator will get you to do different tests and my experience is whether or not you pass them the paramedics would take you to hospital and do a scan on your head to see what's going on. Even if symptoms have gone they can tell from a scan. You can get strokes at a young age so they shouldn't have fobbed you off with that. I found that out after reading that Jessie J was 18 when she had a stroke. As the symptoms have gone now I'm not sure what to suggest regarding calling 999, but I think you should definitely see a doctor. Maybe call 111 and ask for advice. Don't diagnose yourself. Tell the symptoms to a medical professional and how it is reoccurring and for them to investigate and diagnose. I won't go into the story about my dad, but you should definitely see a doctor, and push for that MRI you were offered 2 years ago for these repeated neurological symptoms. There can be other things going on in there causing this. They need to scan your head.

Geamhradh · 01/10/2021 14:06

People really need to not do armchair diagnoses on threads like this and just tell the OP to contact medical professionals.

HeadPain · 01/10/2021 14:09

my experience is whether or not you pass them the paramedics would take you to hospital and do a scan on your head to see what's going on.

To be clear, what I meant here is that in my experience even if you pass the tests they will take you to A&E to investigate
