Recently had gastric sleeve and need to get 50 to 60g of protein a day.

However I've really gone off meat. It makes me gag Sad

Any ideas on how I can get a good amount of veggie protein in. Also really gone off eggs.

But good with dairy.
. Tia.

There's 15.9g in 150g of Skyr yogurt
2 quorn sausages 8.7g (personally I'd eat 3!).
9g in the individual snap pots of sugar free baked beans (heinz)
I'd be cautious of lentils and too many pulses if you've had a gastric band!
Protein powder might be an option? I'm liking the flavourless rice one of these at the moment - a 10g serving (about a heaped teaspoon) adds 8g of protein to porridge or soup. www.pulsin.co.uk/shop-by-range/protein-powders/

Hi,

Lots of supermarkets have high-protein versions of cereals, I’ve been trying this one from Lidl:

www.lidl.ie/p/back-to-school-breakfast/high-protein-granola/p5250

It is available in the UK, I just couldn’t find the link.

Newgirls · 01/10/2021 09:16

Butterbeans?

Hummus?

Greek yog - not low fat.

Nuts?

Hobbitch · 01/10/2021 09:22

I like the Quorn range, the veggie Richmond sausages, and if you have organic food shops nearby you could try the Taifun tofu range. They do a lot of different flavours, and the texture is lovely and firm.

MagpiePi · 01/10/2021 09:28

I don't think that high protein cereals/biscuits/ bread etc are particularly high in protein compared to how bulky they are.

Greek style yoghurt - Skyr or Fage, or the much cheaper Alid versions:
cottage cheese is pretty high in protein too. I mix in spicy chutneys to give it some flavour.

Protein drinks might be the way to go - I use Impact whey unflavoured from MyProtein mixed with cocoa powder to make a chocolatey milkshake. Some of the flavoured ones are ok if you don't mind that artificial sweetener taste.

BrilloPaddy · 01/10/2021 09:29

High protein yogurt like Skyr

Cheese - low fat ones like Paneer or Feta

I do eat lentils, chickpeas and beans but in very small quantities else I get horrid digestive pains

Richmond veggie sausages are good; and any of the Good Life range. Linda McCartney lincolnshire sausages or Chorizo and red pepper equally good.

5thnonblonde · 01/10/2021 09:32

You can make chocolate mousse from silken tofu 😋

Postdatedpandemic · 01/10/2021 09:36

It is probably a good idea not to abandon meat and eggs completely. Add some of the good ideas above and avoid the slider suggestions.

Can vegetarian protein shakes not be incorporated? I would keep them stocked even just to utilise as a top up on days where you're low on protein or have nothing in.

Otherwise yogurt, or things like lentils and chickpeas or soybeans (most beans really) are good and you can squeeze lots in a meal, do chickpea 'mash'. The holland and barret dried soy chunks and soy mince are very high in protein and versatile for any meal.

Seitan, tofu, tempeh are also all high in protein meat replacements.

Otherwise I'd make a point of adding things like peanut or nut butters into rotation, and sprinkling nuts and seeds onto meals (on salads, as a crumb, porridge, with yog etc). Sane gosford nutritional yeast, which is tasty and packs a nutritional punch.

If you're happy with dairy, greek yogurt and cottage cheese are protein rich, as is paneer.

Google for vegetarian high protein neal plans and see what takes your fancy!

MilduraS · 01/10/2021 10:29

I'd go with protein shakes. I've never found one I loved but the chocolate ones aren't bad. I realised when I was calorie counting that I don't have a lot of protein in my diet and used the shakes to increase it without too many calories.

Carboncheque · 01/10/2021 10:33

I like Yeo Valley super thick yoghurt. The 5% fat has 9 grams of protein per 100g and the 0% fat has 10g/100g.

Neonplant · 01/10/2021 10:33

I had a gastric sleeve 12 days ago. I've been a vegetarian for about 25 years since I was 10ish. I'm currently eating a bowl of puree silken tofu!

I've bought some unflavoured soy protein powder to add to veg dishes.

Pulses, tofu, protein yoghurt, meat replacement, dairy and milk will all be good.

Also there's a bariatric surgery support thread on here if you need it.

So you aren't ethically vegetarian ?

What about fish ?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/10/2021 10:51

15g of peanut butter is nearly 4 grams of protein.

My son is a keen sports person and says this is good
www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/clear-whey-isolate-sample/12081401.html?autocomplete=productsuggestion

They also do a vegan version which I've tried and it is fine but is lower in protein ( and calories)

It's 20 grams of protein without too many calories.

PumpkinGal · 01/10/2021 10:51

No. I just can't stomach any meats right now. I gag and if I manage to swallow I vomit.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will make a shopping list

Fish is OK. I can eat that

Tofu is very high in protein - silken tofu can be used in a lot of ways, if the firm or extra firm is too difficult for you to manage at the moment. Here are a few recipes.

The great thing about tofu is that it's basically a 'flavour sponge' and you can make it taste however you want it to!

As a PP said, maybe avoid legumes and pulses until you've got a handle on what you can tolerate. Smile

Neonplant · 01/10/2021 13:27

My tofu puree has filled me up for hours. Which on a tiny portion is impressive. So depending on how far out you are I'd recommend this, but perhaps less mushed up!

PumpkinGal · 01/10/2021 14:14

I'm 2 months out.
Had lentil soup with no issues.

I had gastric bypass surgery a year ago and I was/am the exact same and cannot stomach meat.
I hated fish/seafood before but love it now so if you’re not strictly a vegetarian I would recommend it as it sits easier in our new stomachs as well. Tuna and cod (even fish fingers) are particular favourites.
Otherwise try protein yogurts like skyr, protein shakes, milkshakes with low sugar (the yazzoo kids range works for me) cottage cheese, normal cheese, baked beans and hummus. There’s also lentils and whole chickpeas but I find those don’t sit as well.
I’m also currently enjoying the Richmond vegetarian sausages but at 2 months out they might be a bit difficult for you but maybe a bit further down the line they may work for you.
Just try and always prioritise protein first - but I’m sure you know that!

StevieNix · 01/10/2021 14:40

O and also I hate protein shakes, but I mix a chocolate protein shake with cold coffee and it covers the nasty fake taste that I often find.
Grenade also do nice protein milkshakes and bars that aren’t too bad

BlackeyedSusan · 01/10/2021 15:41

Seeds once you are healed. Can make your own hummus. Or falafel.
